Installed new starter switch and no change then I bypassed the switch altogether and ran the coil off the battery and the same thing, starter keeps turning and the only way to stop it is to unhook the battery. Any further thoughts would be appreciated.
As stated in the previous thread Have you checked for low voltage, voltage drop? Could be high resistance dropping voltage through the cables or bad grounds. Pull and file grounds battery to firewall, battery to engine, engine to frame and firewall to engine. Starting and charging problems are 95% cables, grounds and battery and 5% starter and generator/alternator.
It's been many, many years since I worked on one of those, but it sounds like you have an issue in the starter. Is there a mechanical 'assist' from the starter for the switch? I'd look closely at that, if some internal linkage is hanging up, that could be the cause.
