It is a ***** getting old (late 70's), I was mistaken about the starter, it functions fine, the problem is the generator keeps turning after shutting off the engine. So sorry for the mistake, any thoughts on why the generator keeps turning until I unhook the ground cable ? Thanks again.

Could be the contacts in the voltage regulator are stuck.

I will check that, if they were wouldn't the generator turn every time I turn the ignition switch on? This only happens after I turn off the ignition/engine. Thanks!

The generator will continue to "motor" if the regulator contacts are sticking when you shut off the engine but they can release when you disconnect the battery. If you pull the cover on the regulator, you can see what it is doing. A couple of taps on it may also open the contacts.
