starter motor question 52 buick

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by big hugh ness, Apr 18, 2012.

  1. Hi guys. I recently bought a used starter motor to replace my old one. (I have a 52 super) but noticed that the one I bought has two terminals on the solenoid and my old starter only has one. Can you help me out and advise which terminal I should use? I am byp***ing the stock starting unit on the carbi and use a key to start it. Hope you can help.
I am guessing this starter came out of a 1950 straight 8. Hope I can still use it.

  2. I've had a look at a 1950 wiring diagram and it seems to show one of the solenoid terminals goes to the generator and the other to the ignition. Now, I dont have the generator "hooked up" with power, it's just on the belt for the time being so's I can get this ****** thing started.
So, ***uming I hook the ignition side to my new ignition switch, can someone advise what I should be connecting the other terminal to? Would it go to an earth, for instance? At the moment if I connect either one to the ignition, nothing happens.

hope someone comes along soon who knows more about your problem than i. all the solenoids i have seen have one large post coming from battery and a "activator" wire from ignition switch. some external solenoids have another cable going to bendix motor others that are on starter have a hot post from key to feed coil. hope you get it going and good luck. hr

  4. Thanks mate.
This is the 1950 starter with the two solenoid terminals. One to ignition, one to generator methinks... I've tried both, nothing happened. Do I need to earth one of these out? thanks guys

Yes, one of these must be grounded, the other goes to the starter push ****on, which has the other side going to battery or ignition terminal. You have to remember that the generator armature is normally connected to one of these terminals. When the engine is off, the armature of the generator acts like a ground, but after engine is running, the generator armature now becomes positive, thus the same as the other terminal on the solenoid, which now deactivates the solenoid. Hope this helps you out.

the one on my hudson had to ground or earth to the fender to work. i was using it on a stand where it wasn't grounded, it had me stumped for a while. hope you get it working.

  8. dunno but i always loved my gas pedal starter switch in my 52 while gently rubbing dash and talking sweetly slowly pressing gas and magic it starts

  9. Heck, I never thought about it like, kind of making me feel guilty:eek:
Anyway, guys, you are freaking well dead right. Once again (bunch of smart ****s :p) I earthed it out. Damned ******* thing starter. Well, the starter motor started, and that's what I wanted. Bad news is, motor wouldn't budge. But the starter is healthy, and it's pretty clear to me now that there is something godawful unhappy with that engine. Probably why it killed the first starter.
Thanks again, fellas. Beers all round at my place...when you are in town.
