Anyone know of a good source for vintage starter rebuilds? I have a 1970's vintage 1 ton Allis Chalmers FPB 20 forklift, which I need to get up and operating ASAP. The starter motor is dead. Starter solenoid is fine. For some reason; the starter appears to be identical to a late 1930's early 40's American Bantam starter? Probably a swap out by a previous owner. So; I need to locate a rebuilder (online or local). I live in NE IL, outside of Chicago. Most shops around here, don't bother with starters of this vintage. I found a few outfits online - but they do concourse restorations, and wasn't $300 or more : ( I just need the starter working again, not a pristine restoration. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it!
a rebuild is generally only brushes and bushings. You can do that yourself and those parts are cheap. If the commutator needs turning you can do that in a drill press with a file. It doesnt get serious unless the coils or armature are burnt up, even then, buy more, reassemble
