I bought the remote solenoid kit for my '63 C10 Chevy (327") to relocate it away from the headers, from Summit. When I unpacked it, I noticed a hairline crack in the housing, on the top, running out from under the bracket and running just over the edge and down the side about 1/4" or so. I'm wondering if this crack might become worse with the solenoid's plunger moving back & forth and cause premature failure or am I being paranoid ?
i have run a lot of chevies big and small block with and with out headsers. never have i needed a remote solenoid. i would send it back it is broke or did you order a broke one? if you paid for a none broke one then that is what you should have.
bob308, I guess you were lucky not needing one. I've heard of a lot of heat Vs starter issues on SBC's with headers, tho. If I shut off the engine on mine while it was hot, I'd have to wait 45 minutes for it to cool off so the solenoid would engage. I bought a heat shield & blanket for the starter and decided I'd relocate the solenoid, as well. Well, good news is, I emailed Summit Customer Service and told them of my woes. I even sent a pic showing (not very well) the crack. They wrote back in less than an hour and told me to keep the cracked one and they'd send my a replacement at no charge. Now you can't get any better customer service than that! Props to Summit.
Try making new battery cables out of welding cable. The starter needs more amperage when it's hot. I had the same problem on a mild sbc and the welding cable solved it.
