need to check engine to see if its any good , and is a 6 volt system , ,and don't want to buy a 6 volt bat just for that in case the motor is Sh_t(will be swapped out to a v8 if it is),so I am thinking about using a 12v and Isolating the engine using a 12 v coil ,disconnecting body and generator feeds-feasable?, thoughts? 46 PLY flat 6 in my cpe.
Sounds like a plan to me I ran my 6-volt floor pedal actuated starter on 12 volts for years. Just don't crank the engine over for long periods and you'll be just fine. You might need a ballast resistor wired in before the coil so you don't heat it up too bad. If your only going to see if it fires...you should be fine.
thats my plan to see if engine needs to be replaced and check compression numbers,I have some ballast resistors here so will incorporate one ,thought maybe I would need to change out the condensor(IF it has one) as well? whole thing is I don't want to burn out the gauges, generatator or radio, so I will isolate the body somehow, prolly disconnect everything and run a hot lead from the bat.to a completely seperate ign. cicuit.its a pos ground car, so maybe I have to set it up that way? pos to engine ground -neg to ign?
I have jumped my 6 volt shoebox with a 12v car. Just connect the jumper terminals on the 12volt side. Connect the neg terminal of the jumper on the 6v side. Have someone hold the positive jumper terminal on the 6v side.... crank the car and as soon as it starts, have your buddy pull the jumper clamp off the 6v side (quickly) I have done this 4-5 times over the past 3 years with no negative effects..... HC
If it is a positive ground... still do what I mentioned in the above post, but connect the positive clamp on the 6v side and have your pal hold the neg clamp on the 6v side... crank it and disconnect it with a swiftness.... HC
hanks right on the money. I have to jump my 6 volt plymouth with 12 volt batteries about once every 4 months. Just disconnect the generator, hook that 12v battery up with Positive going to the frame and negative going to the starter. Put a ballast resister before the coil if you are worried about frying the points and crank it up. Don't turn on the lights or accessories, and i would think you should be fine.
I've started my '55 with 12v tons of times, I'm sure it's not good for it though, and I definitely wouldn't leave it running with 12v only for power. The 6v in my '55 is unhooked anyway so I could just bring it over if you wanted to use it. I'll give you a call right after lunch
ok ,i'll get off line , have to wait around to hear from the shop on my truck anyway, last 4#'s are 7886
