As a lot of you guys already know, our classifieds are made possible because of three guys: Curious Rash, Corncobcoupe, and Rocky... Volunteers that absolutely work their asses off for us. I'm actually really embarrassed to admit to myself how much they do. It's nuts.

Anyway, the workload is getting to a point where we can't expect these guys to keep doing what they are doing. It's simply impossible for three guys to run a small economy of 18,000 all by themselves. That's not to say that H.A.M.B. folks haven't been gracious and respectable - 99% of you guys are great folks that do all you can to make our lives easier.

That said, there is a 1% factor out there of deadbeats and as the HAMB grows, this 1% represents a larger and larger amount of people. We don't want to be overrun... and we simply can't expect the "super 3" to keep up with them all. It's an impossible situation.

As always, I want to make sure I keep the HAMB population up to date on what's going on in the background. No final decisions have been made yet, but it is a real possibility that we will be limiting the classified section to Alliance members only.

I hate to do it... don't want to do it, but I'm not sure we have much of a choice at this point. I just wanted to make sure I gave you guys a fair warning. Changes of some kind are coming, just not sure which direction we want to take yet.

NOTE: The Jalopy Journal/H.A.M.B. is not and will never be a classified site... I know for some of you, that is the largest part of the experience and I'm sorry to say that will never be our focus.

You have always been fair and just. You will do what you think is best for the HAMB as a whole and I thank you for that.

I think that having the classifieds only available to alliance members is a swell idea. I have seen several people over there that are just around to make money and you never see them or hear from them other than what they are selling. At least you would be getting sponsorship out of the deal for those guys.

This is a great place. Do what you've got to do to keep it that way,Boss.

  5. Good call Ryan... I think this will increase the trustworthiness factor considerably, as well as take a major load off the moderators.

I think it will be easier to track deadbeats too...

They have to Register to be AM's... And provide an addy for the plaques.

Kinda sux but I see the need.

As a broke-ass and can't afford it right now non-alliance member all I can say is ...ouch.

    I hate e-bay.

  8. Classified section? We have one?

Wonder what percentage of people never use them vs. only use them?

  9. I've been up for a change of some kind for a long time.

Anything is better than nothing, and you're never gonna make EVERYONE happy.

Do what's best for the HAMB and that should just about cover EVERYONE...

...and thanks to RASHY, CORNCOB and ROCKY for all the hard work.

    I've noticed it too.

If the classifieds could be viewed by EVERYONE but only Alliance members allowed to post ads.....???? Anyone could reply as well....just not POST the ad.
Alot of other forums do this.....(as you probably know):D

Seems like a good idea to me. Considering what ebay listing and seller fees are, a couple of sales here will save you enough to cover the cost of the Alliance membership.

Same here, $50 goes towards parts for me......... I was going to get an Alliance membership, when the truck resembled a truck. Other than that, my nickels and dimes go toward pieces. Heck, just sold a radiator, and planned on turning that into a new front spring/shackles.
The Classifieds are perfect for me, pickin' up pieces here and there.
But if I gotta, I gotta.
Thanks Ryan/Rashy/Rocky/Conrcobcoupe for all ya do.

  13. I'll second Plowboys opinions on this. Cruisin thru the classifieds is a daily ritual of mine and I've seen so many folks that join up and sit out the waiting period so that they can try to sell us something. It always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I run across something where the seller has one post and it happens to be a classified ad!

  14. Ryan - you might also think about allowing listings from HAMB members who are not Alliance members but who have been registered for 2+ years (assuming that's code-able in UBB).

Sounds more than fair. Sometimes you have to pay to play. As a relative new comer to this site, it was important for me to become an alliance memebr to help support it in any way I could.
There is not alot of resources or communities out there that can trump this one. Anything you need to do to move it upward & onward will be supported by the HAMB crew.
Will you piss some peolpe off? Sure. But they can't think you do all of this for free.Time is money. Computers cost money. Resources have to grow with any endeavor to make it successful and in my humble oppinion you are to be headed in the right direction.

We thought about the two plus year thing... I think the logistics of that would just add more work for the moderators. Plus, we've had some deadbeats that have been registered since 2001.

If we do the alliance only thing, we will most likely set it up so that anyone can read the ads, but only alliance members can post or reply to them... Non alliance members would still be able to send PM's to sellers, but at that point it is up to the seller as to whether or not they want to do the deal...

Ohh, and this is not a money deal at all... In fact, if this decision was made purely from a financial aspect, I would keep the classifieds open to all simply because that section drives so much traffic.

  18. I think its great you should capitolize on all the work you do Ryan.. And this will force buyers and sellers to become alliance members.. sweet idea !!! or you could let it run its self have no moderaters and remove the comments part again ???

It could work that way, but I don't think it will... I think this could possibly decrease my revenue by limiting traffic/conversions...

This decision is being made for the health of the economy, not my bottom line.

That said, I hope it works as you say!

I'm sure ya'll already thought of this, but... If you do that, you need to make sure that there's some sort of statement to the fact that Alliance Membership does not "buy" you the classifieds. They are still seperate, but the classifieds are a perk to Alliance membership.

Meaning, some classic car lot can't send in $50 bux so they can start doing whatever they want on the classifieds without recourse. If you screw up enough on the classifieds, that you will get kicked off and not necessarily get your money back. Something to that effect, at least. Does that make sense?

I'm sure 3 of the 4 of ya'll have this pretty much figured out. Just use small words when you explain it to Rashy.:p

I don't want to sound like I am bitching. I am just so damn broke - and have been for a good two years....

An Alliance Membership is cheap and is a very good deal - just not in the cards for me. I am lucky to be able to afford an internet connection right now - a membership is way off the scale for me.

(Edit: removed political content) The price of fuel and our local economy it's been rough. Laid off, back to school and currently a temp for a local utiliy - it's like my own little "depression" era. I hope my "Golden" age is just around the bend.

Well enough cheering you guys up - Ryan do what you need to do, I can't really say I use the classified section as much as other folks anyways, I guess this will just help take away the temptation....

By far the best Classifieds solution to date.

Can't wait for it to go into effect.

Broman, I can understand your positioning for sure. I don't want to do this at all mainly cuz of guys like you... But what makes me even more sick is when a guy like you sends some smoe $50 for an intake that he never gets... That really really hurts.

I just re-read the whole thread - if I can look but not touch - it's a fair trade. I thought I wouldn't even be able to view the Classified threads.

Not feeling nearly as bad now.

Besides - don't worry about my feelings - I have a thick enough skin. And I may be down but I'm not out....

Winds of change are a blowing....

i love the classifieds.....i hate ebay for the most part.......

i try to price things better for my hamb buddies.....

i don't like it, but then again i'm not the one burdened with the "mess"

so, with that said, I can certainly see where you're coming from.....

side note: more mods= not an option.........still too much hassle?

edit: you know, i saw one of those "smoe's" posting crap for sale last night and i was thinking........crap, not this dude again...........i guess i'd rather miss some deals i never knew existed than get burned on some....

  29. how about this...

with the reduction of the posting traffic, you could delete the 'wanted' section of the classified board altogether. if an alliance member needs something it could go on the main board, and a non-member could still PM that person and its would be at the member's discretion to do business or not.

    just a thought.

    Hi Ryan;
I too am on a fixed income and I read the Classifieds and even post on the wanted area now and again. That said. I will continue to be a part of HAMB for as long as you'll have me, with or without the Classified. If I had been here longer I would vollenteer to help out where ever needed. I seem to be on here almost every day anyway and just like formatting the music list on one of the posts I don't mind doing something that will help everyone else. I would even help Denise compile the HAMB Helper list if she need it. I live to far away to come help with the stuff you do but if you have need of me all you have to do is ask. As far as the Classifieds are concerned, this is and has always been your site. Gumpa
