States that do NOT require a physical examination of the car for registration?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mpls|cafe|racer, Dec 27, 2006.

  1. One more thing, awhile back someone else was trying to find a way to jump thru the hoops at DMV & someone said that their local AAA place did hassle free title work for them. Maybe check into that direction. Good Luck!:D

Bumping this for further replies. Seems like a useful thread.

  4. First thing I'd do if I were you is go to a different DMV office, and ask them how the heck you register a pre-1973 New York automobile given NY has never issued titles for 1972 and older, the registration is the title -

NY is so easy, you could get plates for a vin tag and not even have a car to attach it to - and not even have a registration for it.

I've already talked to our DMV. The reply?

"Go back to NY and get the person on the registration card to register it and get a current title that you can use here then."

    :(

Now, if I had a NY registration and someone in a state that will accept it to transfer said registration into their name and then sell me a "modern collectable document".... ;)

  6. My response would have been that New York does not issue a title for 1972 and older and the document I come back with will be exactly like this one, just have a different year on it. NY reg cards haven't changed much since the 60s.

There has to be a way to do it, otherwise anyone who moves from NY to MN wouldn't be able to register their pre-1973 cars. Sounds like maybe yours is a really old one and that's why they don't like it?

When I moved from NY to VA I went to the local DMV and got the same "you need the title from NY" to register my '30. I asked to see a supervisor and he told the young woman to "Look in the book!" The book was a 6 inch thick book with all the laws from all 50 states about how cars were registered. She looked up NY and it told her that there were NO titles issued for pre-early 70's cars in NY. She took my old NY reg and issued me a VA title. No sweat.
Then I tried to register my '46 trailer. Seems she would accept the NY reg only if I had the original bill of sale from 20 years earlier! Lucky I had the original $75 bill of sale otherwise I would have had to go outside and have the previous owner write one up!
Next was my '66 Corvair. I had never registered it in NY but I had a bill of sale on the NY official form. She passed that with no problem. I got a title but did not register it.
My '88 Chev wagon caused a minor problem. The title said "suburban". The clerk could not understand that that was the old NY way of saying "Station Wagon". She wanted to know why my Celebrity didn't weigh 6000 lbs like all the other Chevy Suburbans she had registered! I think she finally regged it as a 4 door in VA.
When I moved to NJ their computer "knew" it was a station wagon from the VIN.
I'm glad I did all the titleing in VA. It made it much easier to update all my stuff when I moved to NJ!

    Yup, stay away from Minnesota...
It took two months and numerous calls to St. Paul HQ just to get Collector Plates for my '39 when I registered it.
I had asked for two new ones because I wanted to have a front plate as well just in case I went out of state.
Pretty tough request I guess...

I was a wholesaler in CA and it was hit or miss on physical inspections...
Had one newbie try to find a door sticker VIN on a '30 Model A :D
All depended on the location/staff Hollister was the best!
Watsonville was So-So Stay away from Capitola :p

    Arkansas...

    No saftey inspection req.

Out of state title is supposed to get the VIN verified by any law inforcement, only had to do it once.

No title required, only bill of sale with a VIN# on it if the vehicle is 25 yrs old.

we also have a ohio used car dealers liecense and i am not allowed to inspect cars, a used car dealer that does inspections requires a special permit from dmv to do inspections, but all title burea's are authorized to do dmv inspections, they just check the vin you can trailer it there if not running, but we are getting asked for notorized bill of sale more often for out of state cars. especially if the selling state does not require a notorized title for in state tranfers,

Nevada requires at least a VIN verification for out of state titles transferring to the state. If it has a Nevada title nothing is needed.
My 1934 went straight through (Nevada Title)
My 1952 VIN was signed off by a U.S. Marshal (Utah transfer)
My 1954 VIN was signed off by a N.V.H.P. without looking at the car (Utah transfer)

Anybody in KS titled something with a good VIN on the frame and a TITLE to match the frame VIN with a different body? I have VIN plate and a clear title from a 73 or so Chevy Luv, I want to put on my modified roadster, how much flack do you think I'll get, either way it'll be non recognizable by cops around here no matter what I use, the body is pretty well home built. It'll be an Antique plate which comes back as no record found/current tag through their computers, so they don't know what the vehicle really is unless they pull me and I show them the registration. I know they don't inspect, and if I get pulled it will have a matching vin on it that will be clearly visible, think I could slip by with this or is it trouble waiting to happen? Thinking put the VIN on the frame cuz I might change the body again later, could I do this then file for a body change and be completely legal? I just want to do this because I figure some kind of VIN/TITLE/TAG is better than none at all and I don't want to go through all the special build crap in Kansas, it's just to big of a headache anymore.
