Actually, it is fairly simple and less expensive also IF you plan ahead and use 5 on 5.5 pattern hubs and rear end. My 32 Roadster has 56 F-100 brakes on the front and a early Bronco 9 inch Ford in the rear. BOTH use the old Ford standby pickup pattern on 5 on 5.5. I have 15 inch rims. The fronts are a set off my old 56 F-100 Big Window pickup and the rears I made using a set of 56 F-100 centers and a 15x7 pair of white spoke wagon rims. Way less than 100 dollars total. I bought the beauty rings at Hershey ( real Ford ones ) 25 years ago for 50 dollars and the NOS hubcaps the next year for 50 dollars also.

I have little money invested but these where 25 years ago prices :) :)

Here's the Wheel Vintiques steelies I had made up for my Essex. Fronts are 15 x 6 with a 2 1/8" backspace and rears are 15 x 7 with a 2 1/4" backspace. They arrived in grey primer and plans are to shoot them gloss black. The truck will be a very light grey.

I love steelies. I run 16 inch Fords on all the car I've built.

My 16" X 4.5" Mopar donut spare tire steelies. All four came from different salvage yards and never saw any use. None cost more than $15. The tires were used...I bought them off of a guy that was switching to radials. He also threw in his tubes. Still, it does get expensive when you have to multiply by four.

For me it was the look I wanted, and it's still cheaper (or at least no more expensive) than getting aluminum wheels from a popular american wheel company. I don't have pictures because they're not mounted to the truck yet, but my list goes:

Front: 15x8" Wheel Vintiques Artillery Wheels, reversed with 3.5" Backspace
Back: 15"x10" Wheel Vintiques Artillery Wheels, reversed with 3.75" Backspace.
Total for wheels: $970 Including shipping.

    Powdercoating: $210

So I'm in for almost $1200 without tires and my caps that I need to buy and have modified, but they're what I want for the look and should last for longer than I will. I'm not complaining, because the big fat lip wheel look on my truck is going to look killer, I think.

To the OP, because mine were all custom offsets and reversed, the bare steel wheels were more than $225 a wheel, so your estimate of $900 including everything seems alright.

I can't understand why go thru the extra expense of powder coating wheels? Most of the wheel is usually covered with caps & trim rings anyway.
Rattle can has worked for me for years with no problems.

How long ago did you get these? Is Stockton still in business?
They show a "Henry" wheel on their website that I really like.

I've been having a heck of a time finding the oldies as well.
As someone said, the guvmit has made most of the old yards close or crush out all but newer stuff around here as well.
I've been asking around all the local hot rodder types to no avail.
I've got a friend that has (or used to have) a 54 F100 parts truck.
I need to call him and see if he still has it and if I can buy it from him.
I could get the wheels, front brakes and all.

As far as the pricing on stuff these days, check my tag line.

I got my wheels from Wheel Vintiques in bare steel. I prepped them and rattle canned. Still look great a few years later. I couldn't afford 5 spoke mags and now I'm glad I couldn't.

  15. I really like the steel wheel look with the small caps and no rings. I like em white on my 4x4's (67-72 Chev), and black on cars. But to me black wheels look best on a black car and sometimes a white car.

I came real close to putting steel on my 62 Unibody, but Im still undecided on final color so decided against it.

These wheels and tires are going on my panel. Its a few years off topic, but I think this look would look nice on lots of earlier rides so Ill post the pic.

I got the wheels and caps cheap off of Craigslist and the tires from Diamond Back

There are a couple on here about swapping wider rims onto your centers and that was really common back years ago.

One of my classmates in school caught all hell from the shop teacher because he pilfered a set of Buick rims out of the school shops wheel stash and cut the centers out of them and welded the centers from his 55 Ford wheels into them to make some great looking reverse wheels.

No powder coat on mine & plain caps, so pretty cheap except for the tires.
These will be on my low and chopped '50 Chevy pickup. I'm documenting the project well, but it's probably not traditional enough for the HAMB. (6BT Cummins and Trans-Am front)

Mine are 10" reversed, so there is over 6" of the hoop in front of the wheel face. I will be running caps but no rings, so a lot of the wheel will be showing. I wanted something that was durable, had a professional finish, and would last for a very long time. I've also heard first-hand from guys that have done both that powdercoated wheels are much easier to clean bugs, etc off of. Since I am going for low-maintenance on this truck, that helped in making the decision too.

Rustoleum works fine for me...I keep changing colors anyway. I'm sure powdercoating is mo better though...
