I was planning on putting bullet center caps on my 1950 Shoebox with 15" steel wheels 5 on 4 1/2, but center hole is to small (2.65") The smallest ones that seem to be available are (2.95") There's a lip on center hole and to bore/grind it out would eliminate lip and would take a lot of grinding and the cost of machining would be as much or more then a set of used wheels I'm thinking. So my question, is there another ford wheel that would fit and have a larger center cap hole? Any info is appreciated.
Yes, agreed just didn't seem like the right way to go. There's got to be a later steelie that will fit though.
May want to look at a Mopar wheel. I had 64 Galaxie wheels on a 66 Dodge and the center hole in the Ford rims was too samll for the Mopar hubs, so I ***ume the Mopar rims have a larger center hole. 15 inch steel wheels were available on Dodge Diplomats, Plymouth Grand Furys and Chrysler Fifth Avenues from late 70's to mid to late 80's. Are there any shoeboxer's out there running a plain old steelie 15'' that a bullet center cap fits without boring the center hole?, at least a 3.0'' center hole.
I don't think that is for balancing, plus the wheels are lug-centric, meaning that the lug nuts center the wheel. You can bore out the center of the wheel within reason with no problem.
Wheel has a 2.65'' center hole right now. The smallest bullet is 2.95". I would have to bore out at least .03" that would remove lip on center hole. Seems like to much to be removing and a lot of grinding.
I had my original steel wheel centers punched out to fit my 8.8 rearend. I have a machinest around the corner from me that used a Bridgeport to open them up. I don't think grinding would be a good idea but its your car. You could probably get another set of steel wheels from a junkyard that will work with the centers you want to run for the same price as machining.
