Need to rebuild/replace the steering box in my 57 ford wagon. Manual steering. Any body know if another box will fit or a source to get another box? Im sure i can rebuild it its just id have no where to keep it when i have it all apart. I saw the Borg boxes that convert to power steering but id rather just keep it the way it is. Thanks guys

I think 55 & 56 may interchange as far as box bolting in place but I don't know if the columns will mix..

The '57 steering box was a poor design, they went to the recirculating ball type in '58 which was far better. I would consider using one from a '58, although you will need the mast jacket also as it's slightly different. The '58 unit will bolt in exactly the same though.

    No.They do not interchange.

When using a 58 box… not sure if the splines will match. A lot of guys then use the whole column as well from a 58.Bolts in directly. Then…using a 58 box and column.. your horn will not function.I believe a direct swap is a 63 galaxy unit..I will go check that info...

Thats cool! Just did a quick google search and saw some stuff on 57 ford forever talking about this. Goin to do a lil more homework on it. Let you know what i find. As far as using a 58 column and box im in the same boat since its hard finding old parts near me. Thanks again everyone!

If you want a direct bolt in you will need a 57-58 box. I tried to use a 57 mast housing on my 58 Ranchero and the mast was 1/2" from the steering wheel. 57 was weak box that got upgraded to a much better box in 58. If you can find one replacing it with a complete 58 box and mast is the best option. You'll be better off with a 58 than rebuilding the 57. The systems interchange but the parts for each column do not.
