I have a 35 Ford with about 66K. It has a 49 Merc in it. The steering is pretty stiff and an issue for me since I had my shoulder replaced.
I've read several things but would like for some others to chime in and/or reflect.
One said replace fluid with STP ?
Another said to replace with a 37 or later box.
    Vega box?

I'm looking for simple types of conversions (who isn't!). The box is pretty close to header too.
    Thanks in advance.

I have used F1 many times , never used F100 , and Vega always works good . You just need to determine what fits and is least work for the end result .

I tried and tried. I read Fords pathetic instructions. Finally gave up and will use a 1940 steering assembly

  5. I haven't heard of using the F1 steering since the 1935 and up was cross steering. I think I would stay with the '37 and up to about '40 Ford. Check the archives. These boxes will look like they belong there, the Vega box looks like it belongs in a Vega.

37 to 40 is the way to go if you want to keep it original just up dated ,re drill the top hole in later box below the original hole .. if you don't mind mods put a vega in the sucker in aus we use a holden box very similar to your vega

You didn't mention your steering wheel size. A larger stock wheel offers more mechanical advantage than a small street rod chrome one. I assume you have checked your tire pressure, and also your king pins for grease and smooth operation.

Thanks for replies ! Stock steering wheel. Tire pressure is good. Tires are a tad big @2.05x16 on stock 35 wheels. King pins were good and greasy. I've got wind of a 40 box locally. I may check it out. Keep the feedback coming! Thanks!

Have you checked the lube in your current box? Might try John Deere corn head grease. It's a thicker grease that flows good into the nooks and crannies when warmed up (next to the exhaust). Also make sure all the tie rod ends and kingpins are really lubed (regular chassis grease) as well.

an advantage to using pickup steering (if memory serves) is that it automatically returns to center and the earlier ford boxes don't.

  11. If your earlier Ford Box steering doesn't return to center it is time to have it rebuilt.

Did you try disconnecting linkage at the pitman arm and making sure it's free? You can check the box AND the steering linkages and Kingpins/spindles this way.

A '35 steering box will never turn as easy as a '37-'40 box. Also a GOOD '37-'40 will steer as easy as a Vega box.
For manual steering probably the best box is a 525 Saginaw.
