I have a 69 camaro manual steering box I'm using on my project. It was a little rough feeling so I pulled it apart and water had got in it. Ordered a kit and the bushing and seals are the same but the end cap won't screw on but about one thread. It acts like the new bearings and race are to thick, plus the bearings look cheap and have a plastic cage. Anyone know where I can just get the bearings and race?
http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=74965 5666683 and 5666693 might be the parts you're looking for? here's one place to find them, there should be others, and finding NOS GM stuff would be best, of course. https://bearingsdirect.com/5666683-93-manual-steering-bearing-bca-8537-3-4x1-1-2x0-42/
Thanks, that looks like what I need, ill do a little more research on the specs. I was thinking several manufactures used these same bearings but I could be wrong. It's been awhile since I done this.
Or ford 8.8" or rack & pinion steering or any mul***ude of " later than ' 65 "parts .? Ask the source , bound to be some mumbo jumbo available ?
It's going on a 57 chev if that makes a difference. I've found several out of stock ones, got a few emails out there waiting to hear back.
I'm going to a straight axle later, right now lm just going to get it running and driving. I seen a build on here where a guy put a vega box on his 55 so I'm doing it with this box, don't like the vega box on a heavy car.
That box was "thee" manual box for the majoity of 64 GM mid or full size p***enger cars with a manual box. How the hell it is going to work in a 57 Chevy without a lot of mods is beyond me though. Top being the 64 ElCamino box aka 69 Camaro box bottom being the 57 box without half the steering shaft showing. The late box isn't going to fit where the early box did and I don't think there is room to move it forward for cross steer on the 57 frame without a lot of cutting.
The guy that done the vega box made his own mount, dropped it down and used the ball out of the 57 pitman arm and installed it in a dropped pitman arm. I'll try to find the build thread. Anyway, the casting # on my box is 5678142, no number on the bearing race, first thing I checked.
55 chevy 2 dr sedan by Larry T. It's in the build threads. Wether I use this now or when I put the straight axle in, I still need bearings. The closest thing I've came up with on the casting # is a 69 z28 with the casting # of 5679142.
