I just got my new rebuild kit for my steering box and the gears that came are different than the gears that were in my box. I ordered parts for a 54, and they sent me a 2 tooth sector and steering gear for a 2 tooth sector. I have a 3 tooth sector in there now. Is my box possibly a 52-53? Anyone know what the difference is between the two? It looks like this 2 tooth sector gear is slightly narrower than the 3 tooth so i don't think it can be switched out. I got my parts from macs. Maybe I'll call them in the morning if nobody knows? Though, my experience with them is they just know that the computer screen tells them to say.

I think both rustyfords aka Don Allan and HOT ROD PRIMER have both done rebuilds on a '54 box might want to use the "Conversation" option with them.

It is my understanding that the 3 tooth sector didn't come out until late in the 56 model year. I thought the 54,55,and early 56 were all 2 tooth.

Ok turns out the 3 tooth was in 52 and 53. In 54 they went to a 2 tooth. Maybe mercs stayed with 3 tooth because they realized it worked better? Anyways, had to get one gear from macs and the other from c&g ford parts. Hopefully it all matches up now.
    Thanks for everyone's input.
