Hello, everybody.I am new to this board. I have a model a doodlebug and am replacing this steering box. I would like to put a Vega box on it. But I am not sure how much work that would entail compared to rebuilding the original steering box. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
If your set -up has a Ford-A Steering box, knowing witch one? helps,,,28/29 A-box had colunm welded to box=early modal A,was not as well engineered. Later Modal A,30 ,31 was smoother{ better bearing set-up } colunm bolted to top steering box... Early box not worth your time to rebuild, latter is better,if you's like to rebuild it.. Replacing box completely, you need to match arm movement to old box,,an besure the tir-rod end can bolt too pitman arm// When a new type box mounting, besure to have both wheels straight ahead, and box dead center of box travial. Than added pitman arm to box so it is straight up n down. Adjust tire rod=with out moving frontv wheels or steering box out of center...
A more common upgrade on "A"s is to replace the clunky original box with a much smoother Ford F1 pickup truck steering box of the early-to-mid-'50s. There are a few threads on here regarding this swap. They are relatively cheap and rebuild parts are still available. Here's one I converted to cowl steering, on a champ car. Commonly referred to as a Gemmer box.
