Did s quick search here but didn't find what I needed. Got a 55 Ford I'm changing the steering box on. Will it come up through the floor or down and out??? Looks like I'll have to pull the exhaust manifold off to get it up through.
Must be nobody has done this, soooo.....I got it out by trial and error. Mine has the V-8 so the exhaust manifold had to come off to bring it up through into the interior. Dropped the mounting screws to the dash, disconnected the turn signal wiring, removed the floor plates surrounding the column, unhooked the shifter arm, dropped the pitman arm off, removed the 3 screws holding it to the frame, and pulled/turned/pulled some more and finally got it up through the floor, complete!! That being said.....I have a new box/shaft without the actual column jacket and shifter****embly. I put it in without the mast jacket attached, as I thought that it would be easier and lighter to handle. Slipped right into place!! But before I could get out of the car to start replacing the mounting bolts, the box slid out of place and hit the floor!!!! So I found out if the tie rod is disconnected, and the pitman arm is off, it will remove/replace from the bottom too. That would have saved me from taking off the exhaust manifold !!Live and learn. Got the box bolted to the frame, re-installed the mast jacket and shifter tube and all is well. Just a few more things to*****on up and I'll be on the road !!!
