Hey guys, I'm having issues with my 49 Merc power steering conversion. I put in the Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering box (2004) and now I"m trying to figure out what to use to connect the stock shaft to that box. I am keeping the original column to keep the 3 on the tree shifting, but the coupler I got, a 3/4" DD ujoint, didn't fit on the jeep box and was too long to fit in the space I have.

So I'm thinking about using either a straight coupler or a rag joint. I'm still confused on what to get though since the 3/4" ujoint didnt' fit. I measured the jeep box and it's actually 18mm, smaller than the 3/4" I bought...

Has anybody done this conversion before? What joint did you use?

See if you can find a coupler from a jeep parts list and go from there. Ja a similar problem and had to buy 2 tag joints to make one.

Thanks for the response deto. I've tried to find a jeep part, but they all show a spline connector and mine is a DD shaft on the gear box. The universal I thought was going to work had 3/4" DD but didn't even fit on it. Apparently the box has some special dimension, I remember talking to somebody about this and I can't remember who it was.

I thought I had it all figured out but alas I was wrong. I'm figured I'd be able to fabricate something to work but don't even know where to start because it's such a vital part of the car I don't want it screwed up where I lose steering control driving down the freeway.

Lee Manufacturing Co. is who I got a coupler/rag joint and fittings from when I converted a '68 Camaro SAE (fraction) non-pwr steering system to a '92 Firebird WS6 metric pwr steering box. You may have to change your pitman arm to a ps pitman arm. I had to. Do a search here for Lee Manufacturing. I posted some info. Lee can probably steer you in the right direction.

There are 17mm DD and 18mm DD shaft sizes in the Borgeson catalog.

When I've spoken with them in the past they strongly recommend a rag joint or one of their 'vibration isolating U-joints' to filter out pump and hydraulic noises.
