have a freind that bought an unfinished race car and he came to me for help finishing it.first thing i noticed was that the rack and pinion was not square with the frame!,front to rear approx.,1".after trying to fit three steering joints to the rack,i see why they mounted it at the angle they did.it was to reduce the angle of the steering joints so they would not bind.will this misalignment affect a straight line race car?i can't stand it and i want to change it! but this is a perfectly good flaming river rack! thanks!
I don't know how to help you with your problem with out pictures etc. but I sure as hell wouldn't want my name attached to a car with a crooked R&P! I can't stand a crooked picture in the doctors office! If it has to be jack legged then it is not the right part. Even if the owner wanted to keep it, I wouldn't work on it. Someone will ask (maybe years later) Who put that crooked POS in there. I don't want them saying.... Tommy.
yea came to the same conclusion, cut it all out after realizing it was about 3" lower than the pivot of the lower control arm.got her dead nut now.little far foward but it will work out fine.
There are some threads on here, that discuss setup for steering hardware. If you search, the theories about geometry and location to achieve a proper Ackerman effect will be useful. [See post# 13] http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=488394&highlight=ackerman+steering
