The thread going on now about people leaving etc got me to thinking that I haven't been putting much into the HAMB lately. I think if more of us took the time to post the little projects etc we are at, then it can't do anything but improve the board over all by making it even more interesting than it already is.

To that end...heres a little project I did a few nights ago to seal the firewall and hide an exposed steering U joint that goes to the Corvair box.

Basicly, I changed my old Corvair box due to output shaft wear and was able to find a short input box which placed the U joint out clear of the body and away from the brake pedal.
The joint was always a bit of a pita where it was originally located as your foot tended to hit it as the brake was applied.
That problem is now gone....but another problem appeared as the joint required an oversize hole in the firewall.
I fabbed this 2 piece cover to make it all work and blend together. The first step was to make it out of old cereal box cardboard to test fit and then copy it to an old door skin I had lying around. Simple matter then to cut it out and weld it together.
I'll start where the cut steel is loosely trial fitted.
I'll just post the pics as its pretty simple to follow. ;)

Now this is something that looks so cool and fits so well one would think it has always been there.

    Thanks for posting. HRP

That is a nice job on one of the hardest parts . The steering column clamp and seal at the bottom can be a******,and a big leak of air and smells to the inside

  11. Phttttttt :p I don't like the color of it.

Good idea we should try and cover as much ugly as we can and it is the little things that really make a car as far as I am concerned.

    Thanks guys!
I really appreciate all the nice comments!
P&B...I kinda went back and forth on the color...various silvers and stainless paint first and then even thought about painting it red like the frame...but ultimately I decided the bright colors would make it pop way too much visually.
I decided to just paint it satin like the body and use bright screws to give it just a bit of visual draw.
When I stand back and look at it I'm happy with the choice.
It really cleaned up that area without overpowering it! ;)

  13. I like it a lot. Looks way better than my bare unpainted ujoint on my corvair box!!!
