Projects Steering joint question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by model A hooligan, Apr 5, 2017.

  1. I didn't mention it was a tilt? If not my apologies! I can see how I would weld the inner but I don't now how I'd get a piece of the chrome tube back over. There's a lip on the end of the big stupid bearing retainer.it uses that lip to not slip up but I guess I coul always drill the chrome tube and bearing retainer and use a set screw.. that may actually work come to think of it

Oh and looking inside now that it's off, there's no bearing. Just a stupid nylon type sleeve

Poh- yeah I think just making a insert that can support the outer tubes but has the OD of the D shaft and just slip it up the bottom of the column would work out best.

Seems like it would, if you can pull it out the wheel end, you could trim it all, weld it up, then slip the outer back over to the original flanged 'stepped'face, then tack.. or do as you suggested

If you need a piece of Delrin machined to hold the shaft in place just PM me the size part you want made. That'll be a helluva lot cheaper than shipping the whole enchilada. I will just make the part and send in the mail.

  5. I was just gunna ship the bottom part I cut off. Cause it's the exact thing I need replicated. I don't trust my measuring down to this precise

But I Actually work with an engineer and I could have him measure it all precisely come to think of it.

  8. Please Read the link I posted earlier.
Youll find the exact type of column you have with the hollow shaft.

Just google johnnylaw, tilt for search word, it pops up. instruction arn't worth the hassle they want to send them to your E-Mail, no way they are getting that. Besides it wouldn't be instruction on how to tear it apart or put it together..........................................

I haven't read the link but have had my issues with the Hoffman group.
The problem is that the Hoffman group are selling most of the very same product others are selling. Doesn't make things right but that is what is happening everywhere. Speedway sells parts and I'm willing to bet they are made at the very same factories in China that the parts Hoffman is selling.
I made my own column and it uses some 1 ton tapered roller bearings. Overkill, yes but works great. Machines all the parts and know what I have is stronger than a Mack truck.
That said, I wanted some bling on my current coupe build and bought a chrome tilt column. I haven't dissected it beyond a once over but it looks good. Who actually made it is anyone's guess. Looks decent but....

  15. I can't get the link to work but I'll search when I get back home.

I can say that my grandfather has the exact column in his truck and it's been in there for years no problems so far

  20. Can't really see well. What's it look like to you fellas? Looks like it's got metal with plastic bushings

    Attached Files:

  21. The egg looking part is plastic, the black is part of the upper steering shaft

Looking at it,it uses 4 pieces of plastic as bushings, the are shaped like a wedge of fruit (if you can imagine) the lower shaft has 2 ears and the upper shaft has 2,the go in between each other and the plastic wedges go on the sides of those. So it looks like it's a bit of both designs.

**edited** I looked up other columns tilt devices and they look like this one. Looked up some on mid 90's camaros looked just Like mine.i looked up helix, and the broken column. This one does not have that plastic ball like it did

  22. Found this pic online. From a 79 malibu. The shaft in the lower corner is the same setup I have. So I'd suppose I'm okay to go ahead with this?

  24. Yeah I've seen that. However that column uses a different design than the one I have. Mine does not have that pin going through a plastic ball with a shear point.

I was going to take it back to a good friend that's an engineer and have him look at it before I try to fix the bottom of it.

It also turns out technically I could get by with a straight column with no tilt.i need 29" but I suppose a 30 would work. If I could find something really plain and cheap I'd go that rout also.found online some straight cut to length basic columns for under 150 and they are not Hoffman/helix

if you don't need the tilt, any early column can be cut off a steering box. and a new lower bearing installed. you need to do it any way and there is NOTHING that looks better.

  26. At the time I thought that I did. But I just bolted this one back in and put it in the straight position and it seems like it would be an alright angle for me at straight. Could even see the gauges better if it was a straight column without the big mechanism in the way.

You could always offset, pillow block and gear drive your box.
Not the simplest, nor the most cost effective, but if done right could be the coolest.
