Take a close look at the end of your steering column. Just had the same situation with a friend's Austin gasser and the GM column. The end of the column has a bearing and all the balls fell out. It started wandering all over the road.
Get someone to turn the wheel back and forth while you're under it looking at everything. That's how we found it.

Also check your front wheel alignment if the wheels are not set correctly as weight transfers from one front wheel to the other it can steer funny and chop out tires as well.

Check your toe in with a tape measure. Too much in or out can cause it to dart. You want 1/8" toe in measured from tire to tire front and back of the tire.

check the tire pressure especially the rear. Low rear pressure can allow the rear of the car to swing and sway and you are constantly trying to correct with the steering wheel.

You should be able to see any play in your box while it is on jack stands. If the shaft turns but not the pitman arm then it usually needs adjusting. Make sure every thing else is correct before you jump into that. The first thing to do is to disconnect the drag link, turn the box lock to lock and then return exactly 1/2 way. With the wheels straight ahead the drag link is then adjusted to match the pitman arm and not the other way around. Then check for internal play.
