Technical Steering wheel help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chappy444, Jan 12, 2023.

  1. Doing some work on my roadster project and I am trying to sort out the steering using what I have on hand.
    My question is:

Was there a prewar steering wheel that had 36 splines by 11/16th hole?

My research has turned up limited answers to this exact question and I was hoping you all could clear this up.
    Many thanks

Generally speaking, I believe most pre war stuff is keyed.

Double check the 11/16 measurement. Most 36 spline shaft steering wheels I have seen are 3/4 inch.

  4. Thanks @nickleone
My caliper reads 0.681 on the outside of the splines. I figured it lost 0.006 to wear and tear over the years (and caliper accuracy)... unless I am wrong about where to measure steering shafts... which is totally possible
Not sure what the shaft is from. It's 36 spline with no keyway or indexing.
    Thanks again

    just to clarify
you have a later splined column
the big end of the splined end measures 0.681"
and you want to fit a prewar wheel to it.
    correct?

  8. Thanks everyone for the input.
Again, this is a parts pile build. I am not sure what the steering shaft is out of.. I will be using a late 30s chevy box (38 maybe)
I had an old box and column of unknown origin that I am using the shaft and tube from. The shaft has 36 splines, no keyway, and the outside diameter of the splines measures .681. With a threaded top (1/2 x 20) I was looking for a prewar wheel I could just bolt up and go...
I have a wheel of unknown origins (I think it is a 41 jeep wheel) that had the same diameter splines but it was 40 splines not 36.
So, I went all hot rod on it and fired up the lathe, the mill and the press. I turned down the shaft to fit the wheel, then cut a keyway in the shaft and wheel...
    Problem solved.

  10. I’ve got my dad’s broaches but don’t really know how to use them but I probably figure it out when the need arises. Great job
