Yep... a little elbow grease, it came off. Now, anyone know where I could find a replacement? I'd like to find one in White. Doesn't have to be from a 54 or even a customline, but something close or matching would be nice.

Yea those are nice, but not what I'm looking for. I want an OEM wheel or even an OEM that is resized. I found a website / company that restores steering wheels, just waiting to get a reply from them.

How bad is your wheel? If the steel inner structure is not all bent up you can rebuild the outer plastic cover with JB Weld or similiar product, then file it, sand it and repaint.

Search the main board for do it yourself steering wheel restoration.

Eastwood has a DIY kit for restoring steering wheels. That kit and a little lacquer could save you several hundred dollars over a restoration company. Most of them run $500 -$1200.

Just about any Ford steering wheel will fit so you have a wide range of steering wheels to choose from !
You can post a Wanted ad on the main board and Ford Barn telling what you are looking for .
Of course you can always hit up the on line auctions .

Found this steering wheel on the nightprowlers.com site.

I think it's pretty damn cool lookin'. I'm sure you could find a Ford emblem to fit in the center...

,or just use a bullet cap.

Kinda off topic but sorta related here - what year did Ford go to splined shaft & steering wheels?

Just asking because I have a '49 Lincoln wheel - not splined & won't fit the '56 as is.

    When did they change?

I tried to get the wheel off a '54 parts car I have but it wouldn't budge. we worked on it, sprayed PB into it as much as we could but we didn't want to ruin the wheel - it's in pretty good shape. So last fall I soaked it good with PB Blaster, maybe after sitting all winter it'll loosen up enough to break loose. First one I've tried that I couldn't get off.

Ha, yeah Eric I tried that too - didn't want to break the wheel though. I guess the BFH I used wasn't F'n B enough... Oh I'll get it, just have to apply a bit more time & effort into it next time I go up north to pull stuff of the car.

At first I thought were were referring to the spline vs. no spline thing - wow, your special tool might work on that issue as well! NOT.

If you can't fix it with my "special" tool, you've got an electrical problem!

  14. i used that special tool trying to get the pitman arm off the gear box..after breaking the pitman puller i used the special tool and a tie rod seperator.. 5 whacks with the special tool and POP! pitman arm came right off..

Check out Dennis Crooks Quality Restoration Inc. at www.qualityrestorations.com. They are in Poway California and basically take the wheel that you have, and tear it down to the bare metal and recreate what it looked like brand new or something different if you want. The phone number is 858-271-7374. I talked to Dennis at the Good Guys show and he said they start at $750.00
