Well, I was gonna do a whole tech post on steering wheel restoration, but when I was up at Garage del Coollow working on my wheel, my camera batteries were dead!
Sooooo, I will just post the finished shots..
It is 2004 Nissan pearl white and gloss black (black in grooves). I totally wish I would have been able to take a before pic, cause this sum-bitch was nasty.
It had more crack than Marion Barry!
I vee-d out the cracks with a small saw and filled em' with POR 15 two part epoxy, sanded it down like a muther and fellow Coollow, Jason painted it up for me...
    Here are the after shots...
Funny part is, I was running a granny steering wheel cover on it for the past 2 years because it was so*****ed up, and now that there is no cover on it, it feels soo skinny and fragile...
If you are at the Round-up you will get to see it in person....

How does the paint hold up? Mine has just a few cracks I need to fix up, but I wasn't sure what kind of pain to use and how well it held up. Did you use a clear over it?

That is one nice lookin wheel. I have to redo mine sometime in the future. I hope it turns out as good as that. Possibly a stupid question, what'd you use to paint(or keep the paint out of) the grooves?

I like the POR15 kit. I used it last year on my Plymouth wheel and so far it has held really well. I have yet to paint my wheel though. Are shoebox wheels rubber or bakelite?

Jason painted the entire wheel white pearl and then went in with a small brush and painted the black....then he cleared it...

My wheel was a rubber-ish type material... It was messy as a mother.
When I first started sanding it, it made a huge mess...
I think that this wheel is too nice for a schlep like me.... [IMG]

Yeah my wheel dumped horrible rubber smellin dust all over everything. I made sure to wear a respirator. Hey don't worry even schleps get nice steering wheels.

Says so in the rule book...

    Nice looking wheel.

Not to hijack your post, but what is the diameter of that gauge cluster?
That is,the size of the hole in the dash?
I might have an idea. [IMG]

    5.75" across...
    What up? what's the idea?
I think I know where you are going with this.... believe me, I have already thought about removing the cluster, lining the hole with rabbit fur and letting my***** hang out in it while on road-trips.... the hole is waaaay too big (for me that is...)

I was hoping it might fit in a '59 Chevy bezel.
But the Chevy is only 5 1/4".

    Thanks for your help.

    Ian-

You should be able to add a round chrome trim piece to the Chebby guage or something to fill the gap...
Think of like a chrome headlight ring with the Chebby cluster in it (fabbed of course) and then put into the shoebox dash hole.....

  16. Many thanks for the pilots eye view.

Well done on the wheel and the dash.

    Sure brings back some memories.

Since it's a 49 you should enjoy this.

    Nice pic's C9....
I did my pre-Round-up test drive today and I was afraid to touch the wheel...
I almost hit a few things cause the wheel is prettier to look at than the road....
I thought that I saw a smudge on when I pulled into the garage... got to go clean it.... [IMG]
