Technical Steering wheel nut missing

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Babyboomerboy, Apr 30, 2024.

  1. I bought a steering wheel for my 1950 Ford. When I went to take off the old steering wheel I found that the nut that holds the wheel on was missing. Does anyone know what size the nut is or does anyone have a spare they would sell? Thank you

I was going to do a SA comment, heck, I will anyways;)

Sit in the truck behind the wheel.
Look into the rear view mirror.
    You found it!

    Okay, sorry, but had to;)

Go to your stash of fine nuts…or Take a yard stick and estimate the diameter and go to Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace and find one… they are not “special”. They are a USS nut.

Mac’s/Eklers? Dennis Carpenter? Local Hardware store that sells loose nuts/bolts? Think it’s 5/8 fine thread but someone else will be more certain.

They are thinner that a regular nut. You may want to use a jam nut since they are thinner.

Or do what I did and slice a castle nut in half and sand/polish down the edges.

If it's 5/8" fine thread then it wouldn't/shouldn't be hard to find a jam nut.

Our local supply store carries jam nuts in all sizes but the good thing is being 5/8" fine thread it should be easy to find at a part store as in there are millions of 5/8" heim joints as its one of the most popular sizes and they are all fine thread and use jam nuts to lock them down. So if you have or know someone with some Heim joints chances are they have some jam nuts laying around too...

  10. Thank you all for the input. I got a jam nut and it fits like it should. That's one more thing out of the way. Thanks again

Glad it was a simple fix, could have been a real bad day for you if that steering wheel had popped off while driving, oh yeah, don't bother buying a lottery ticket as you have used up your once in a lifetime "lucky guy token"!

Whenever I can't get a larger NF nut I usually head to the nearest factory supply store.
