I had my stock box (49 f1) rag jointed to a gm column nothing else was involved, its been brought to my attention this setup may not be the most secure beings it was only held together with the splines on the gm column and the ones I made on the stock shaft

the stock shaft was one unit so I am now of the mind to go and modify my stock box stumpy shaft to one of them D joints and directly connect the 2 shafts and make them one solid unit with some pins(bolts), am I going to experience any excessive vibration or should it work as though it was the old stock setup?

    thanks

I'm not overly familiar with the setup you have, but you need something in there to allow a little movement, else you will be levering on the joints every time the car flexes. From what I've seen in steering spline setups there is usually a bolt that locks into a groove in the spline, to stop the shaft pulling free from the spline if ever it comes loose.

Upchuck, I don't think anyone had any problems with you using the rag joint, just the home made splines is all.

Most rag joints have some device to stop you losing steering if the rag fails, so unless you feel the splines are a little loose or weak I'd stick with what you got.

I had no fear of my homemade splines giving way or stripping out but since I had no experience to draw on with steering modifications of this type I am relying on wiser more experienced opinions cause the steering is pretty important, [IMG]

I may put the steering on hold til I cogitate a bit more on options or suggestions

    thanks for your input
