Steering woes on a 39 chevy P/U

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56sledz, Feb 9, 2011.

  1. I'm working on a old chevy straight axle p/u thats had its suspension
sergically removed to lower the truck, and now the stock steering seems to be interfering with the geometry.
The long 7" pitman arm that swings front to rear is now hitting the center link.(the arm that connects the L&R spindles for steering)

1.if i shorten the pitman arm i loose steering throw
2.should i modify the centerlink and make a box or curve in it so its out
of the way of the pitman arm?
3.I could raise the steering box(not really a good option)

    OK,
this sounds like an episode of the twilight-zone
i will post some pics so you and myself can understand WTF im
    talking about...

Thanks for letting me fill you head with aimless non-sense! hahaha
    going to get pics

    thx
    wes

the truck has been lowered, perhaps?

  3. Yea its lowered allot,
i'm doing some mods to make it ride better and trying to get
some input on what to do with the pitman arm,
the pics will tell the whole story

Place the front tie rod end under the arm on the spindle instead of on top. The hole in the spindle is not tapered which lets you use a 1950's Chevy truck modern type tie rod end with the non-tapered shank. That's how I handled it. Truck was dropped 4" and steered perfectly. Cheap and easy fix.
