Are you using a Mustang II rack with a Chevy power steering pump?
If so, I've heard that you need to reduce the pump pressure so you won't blow the pump.

True on the pressure difference between older Saginaw steering pumps and those used on Pintos and Mustangs. The Ford racks use a lower pressure.

To check your pump, take the belt off and disconnect the pressure line. With fluid in the reservoir, it should splurt a good shot of fluid out the hose when you flip the pulley. Simple backyard check, but it works!

You may need to adapt a Pinto pump or step the pressure down on your GM one. Contact the aftermarket steering/suspension places...this kinda thing has been done to death and they'll know/have exactly what ya need to get your system working right.

Oh yeah...you'll get some fluid out of the hose for sure...you just wanna see if it's actually PUMPING anything is all.

(It don't take much movement on the pulley to squirt some fluid...trust me!)
