Solid, as in it's not tubing, but bar stock? So like the old time drag racers who put ballast in large pipe back bumpers, but better looking...
I just bought this 1938 Chevy coupe that has a nerf bar on the back. I just started a thread on the car...
Hello, Nerf bars were things that looked extremely cool on show cars and roadsters of all kinds. Most of the hot rods that had them were show cars and some drivers. The drag race cars for competition only had them to still keep a link to the hot rod aspect of drag racing. But, it was a difficult time to see the daily drivers cruising around in chevy sedans or any sedans so popular with nerf bars. The custom approach look really good, but when a tiny blond haired lady in a “Big-as##$ Tahoe” (courtesy of Martin Lawrence) is behind you on the street, the custom Nerf bar is now a questionable choice for bumper protection… Ha! The 1958 Buick sedan, the largest amount of chrome, ever, on a USA made car. Or for that matter, most chrome on any car made. As little as the crash protection was in those old days, the “bigger is better” could have been the story of why those chrome bumpers were so large and extremely heavy. This nice custom approach to a finished hot rod has no chance against any chrome giant from the past or even by today’s standards of large SUVs or popular camping vans. YRMV Jnaki
