I wired my tach up and it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. I'm pretty sure I wired it right:

meter -: wired to - terminal of tach from sending unit and also to a known good ground on the body

Meter +: wired from sending unit to + terminal on tach

Dist. Prim: wired to - terminal on the coil and distributor

My question is where does the unit get positive power from? I tried running a positive wire to the positive terminal on the sender and the tach needle sweeps all the way across. What am I missing here? There's only three damn wires! ImageUploadedByTJJ1374545134.850455.jpg

Tach sender is the same as this one

Yes, they take obsolete batteries. There are many threads about these, the only fix is to have somebody like Williamson's convert them to electronic. FWIW, mine was working until I converted to Pertronix, it didn't like that.

Gotcha. I figured I couldn't have wired it wrong. Any DIY solutions for modern batteries etc?

Depending on the tach used, that is the sender. I've got one like it that still works but I think it's different. It has an "adjustor" access hole on top and all the ones I've seen without it look to have had batteries and are usually crusty inside.

    Here's mine for comparison.
