My dad has a completely overhauled Borg Warner T-86 3-speed overdrive out of a Studebaker.

I have heard these might have been used in some Fords. Will it bolt up to anything other than Stude? I think the bellhousing pattern measures 6"w X 5-3/4"h. Seems like this may be the same as Jeep? Anything else?

    Any info would be appreciated.

Not sure what the numbers are on them, but Studey o/d's are pretty much the same as a 5-6-7 Chev. Not sure about whether they were borgs or what, but I saw one out of a 54 Champion that externally looked the same as my buddy's 57 Chevy o/d

I think you are right Neal, I think alot of the mid 50s ODs were T-86 models. I remember that one (T85 or T86) was leaps and bounds better than the other, but not sure which. I don't know anything else about them, but I'm just confirming that they were used Fords.

Hollanders says 49-57 T86 Stood will interchange with 52-57 Ford/Merc. Stude used the T86 thru 57 and also the T85 56-7 in the Golden Hawk. You have to use the clutch disc that is for that ******.
Rear yokes may have to be changed as well as speedometer gears.
58-62 Fomoco will also swap along with its matching disc.

Ford also used both trannies over many years with the T85 being the HD option.

So it should bolt to a 52-53 8BA bellhousing?

We had a stamped steel 8BA bellhousing of unknown origin to compare and the bolt pattern was not even close.

Were there different versions of the stamped 8BA bellhousing?

Is the T-86 even worth messing with? It sounds like it was the light duty version.

Was the Stood a 6? Those are different than the V8.

I can grab an earlier Hollanders and see if there are discrepancies, they arent always accurate.

There is only one style 8BA stamped bell for the V8 and it uses the same small 4 bolt pattern as the Y Block, FE and early SBF. Ford changed to the wide pattern around 67 and there are a few years with both patterns on the ******.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but a completely overhauled T-86 can turn into a completely worthless hunk of metal with one drop of the clutch. They aren't very strong at all, even with a good shifter they don't shift fast, and parts aren't all that cheap. If you are just gonna use it to putt around it will be just fine and the O.D. will help you a lot on gas milage, but if you plan on putting down any horsepower at all, I suggest finding another ******. The T-85, on the other hand is a bomb proof, quality ******. Some of those came with O.D. too, but they are hard to find and really expensive.
    Good luck

P.S. as for clutch discs...you can use a 10 spline chevy clutch too (1 1/8" I think) But you may have to machine the flywheel to clear the springs...

    No parade to rain on...

It's just something that was in the pile-o-parts(tm). I was trying to see if it was something neat, we would hand on to it, if not it can go down the road. Sounds like it will be headed to the next swapmeet. [IMG]

    Thanks,

If it is as nice as you say, it would be worth a lot to studebaker people. I know I paid $250 for a non-rebuilt T-86, if you got in touch with stude people in your area you could definately get a pretty penny for it.
