Can I turn my miller stick welder into a tig welder? It is a Miller Roughneck and has its own generator. Thanks
    Matt

  2. If it is AC/DC, dont know your model. Find Dolmetch's thread on it. He converted one to a scratch tig.

  3. And it works very well. I ran a full length of filler rod every day for a month. I woundup reverse polarity (tunsten negative) in the end but tried everything. I now use it all the time in the shop instead of the mig or the stick except in unusual circumstances. My rig is a Parweld AWP17V-25. i had to buy also the ceramic and the tungsten and the tungsten collet. i suspect the welding supply store stole them out of my box and any others i have seen came ready to go. Princess Auto, A Canadian company who has an online presence, carrys "scratch tig kits" in stock. ($119.95)Usually there are two in each store. They are probably a better deal than mine since they dont need an adapter for the gas hose and the buzz box plug in. Mine did . The adapter for mine was $19 extra. Mine does have a 25 foot hose and cable though so I can use it anywhere in the shop withut moving equipment. Most are only 12 footers. Disadvantages? None if you learn on this machine since you will not be aware that there is anything else needed. It works as i say perfectly. Practice everyday DO NOT be discouraged. The first few days are frustrating but then it starts to come and you are away. I spent first 20 minutes of everyday running a full filler rod on scrap metal .
Note tig must be clean. Bright and shiny . When your tunsten messes up STOP and regind it right then. Best is have a couple ready to go in your pocket so you can just change them and go. Before you leave for the day prepare a couple of tungstens for the next day. So far I have needed only two. Turn the argon on so you can hear it softly . Make your scratch start quick and deliberate like you were lighting a match. On aluminum clamp a piece of flattened cooper pipe to your work close to were you are welding. Always scratch on the copper and then walk over to the weld.
That is what i have learned so far. i also have a miller AC DC. Even tack welds are incredibly strong in mild steel.

I wish to encourage you in everyway and wish you the very best sucess. You will not be sorry you did this.
