Terrific shot! The 1965 AHRA Nationals. That's the only color shot I've seen of that race ... a better shot than the pro-photog shots I've seen of that run ... unless you're a pro photographer :)
    Both cars were great.
    Thanks.

I remember a match race at Mason Dixon in the mid 60's that was supposed to take place. Ronnie Sox against Dick Landy well Mr. Phil Bonner showed up with his falcon and wanted to play. Dick Landy put his car back on the truck so it was Sox verus Bonner anyone want to guess the outcome?

Not sure about that particular Sox Bonner race, but I know he had one with Sox before the 65 Falcon was completely painted, which Bonner won.SSDI did a photo coverage, and I'm trying to locate those photos.

No one has commented on the car shown in the upper right corner.
    Any guesses?

I was also wondering about that "Branded" car, Mark. If you look at the front fender closely, just behind the guy's tee shirt I'd expect to see a "Z".

    Hi Dan,
I've been cooling it for awhile regarding the internet forums. I think this one is doing great.
Tommy is still available via his same email address. I communicate with him frequently.

Good shots of Phil Bonner's cars in early '65, thanks for posting them. I've always wondered about his Mustang in these and other shots from that Beeline meet, the AHRA '65 Winter Championships ... note the rear wheel openings on his Mustang ... they're not opened following the circumference of the tire. They are near flat across the top. At the NHRA Winternationals not long after this meet they are opened up in a radius like the other FX Mustangs. I wonder what the story was behind this little bit, curious.
The car stayed on the trailer at this meet.

    Mark, Verne,

The Branded car has some of the earmarks of Wally Bell's ex-Hollongsworth-ex-Hubert Platt car ... ? Any ideas yourself Mark? Wally?

    Joel,
I can add some speculation on the "Branded" car. If you look at the side moldings, you can see the inserts are painted black. They only came that way on white cars. All other body colors had white inserts. I doubt anyone would have changed all the side moldings, so I'd guess the car was originally white.:)

    Verne,

Larry Wilson and/or Jack May painted the moulding inserts red on the "Good Ol Mr. Wilson' car. ;)

Mumbles- Thanks for the photos of Don Nicholson's '64 Comet wagon. In the 1960s, a group of us would always go to Daytona Beach for the speed weeks in February, which included the Daytona 500 and usually some NASCAR scantioned drags at the old Spruce Creek dragstrip. I recall one year in particular that a Super Stock Showdown was held at Spruce Creek, in 1964 or perhaps 1965.
Spruce Creek was a modest facility, to put it mildly. It was an old airstrip that had once been used for Navy pilot training, with plenty of cracks in the track with weeds growing up in them, plus some old wooden bleachers, and not much more. The races started in the evening, and the only lights on the track were two of those huge carbon arc searchlights behind the starting line in each lane, shining down the track. There was a heavy fog that night, and the cars running down the track disappeared about half way down , with only a faint lane win light to tell us who had won. Despite the humble track facilities, I believe they were the greatest drag races I've ever seen ! Most of the big names in Super Stock and FX were there, and they ran those cars off one pair after another in rapid succession, with barely enough time for the cars to get off of the end of the track before another pair went down . The races ran until about 2 in the morning, and when all was said and done, a white 427 Comet wagon driven by Don Nicholson had waded through the huge field of cars to win the race. I've been to a lot of drag races since , but that night at Spruce Creek stands out in my memories , and always brings a smile to my face !

  27. Phil didn't win the one with the Falcon unpainted but it was real close!!! I have the article and the race took place at Cecil Co. Phil and I were just talking about that race this past weekend. He had better mph than Sox but couldn't leave with him. He said that unpainted car had Sox scared.

The Outlaw, later was wrecked in a towing accedent,Dave Koffel bought it and used it to build his 65 A/FX Flintstone Flyer Cracker.I attached a very rare photo of the car before he changed the roof to the hardtop style.
