Back in Jan. 1969 the Army transferred me to Ft. Riley, KS and I spotted this car in the parking lot right away, a 1963 1/2 Galaxie sporting 427 emblems. I tracked down the owner and was told that he was from Indianapolis and the car is the one that Bob Glidden drove to a class win in A/S at Bristol. The 427 was long gone and a 390 was in its place.

John wanted to build a strong street engine so he bought a Speed-O-Motive kit and we rebuilt it. One Saturday afternoon we took a road trip to Kansas City and stopped along the way at Don's Speed Shop in Lawrence. Sitting on the floor was a medium riser intake and carbs with a price tag of $75. John didn't have the money so I bought the set-up for him.

At 3800 lbs., it was not impressive on the track turning 13's @ 100 MPH, but it sure was fun on the street!

  2. TMcCrea- that is too cool, love the picture! speedexx- Dick Brannan's 823 Lightweight 427 Galaxie won over 65 races and claimed 22 track records in 1963, times were consistantly in the low 12's.

Which class? A/S? Stock eliminator is still alive and strong, albeit far from what it used to be. Classification guides and engine blue prints can be found at NHRA.com. Factored HP x weight break + 170lbs (estimated driver weight) is the minimum your car should weigh at the scales after a run. The class weight breaks can also be found there as well as sea level index minimums. Class racing is lots of fun, but its all about cubic dollars now.

    Joel,

I don't know if anyone answered your question about the Brainbeau Olds. A bunch of us stocker guys went to dinner at the "Dutch" this fall and among us were Sam Murray and his wife. He has parked the old 442 and now is driving another Olds stocker he recently purchased. He hasn't parted with the 442, just hasn't decided what to do with it yet.

My dad's old L-79 66 Nova taken at the 1970 AHRA Summernationals at NY National Speedway. He won 2 classes, E/HR Formula 3 and E/HR Formula 2 with it and won the eliminator. his best friend Bob Zorn drove the car that weekend as Dad was too busy working for the track.

I have owned the M/T S/S 997 63 LW Galaxie for over thirty years. Only recently have I been able to obtain an unbroken string of documentation, from Ford Motor to Tasca Ford, back to Ford, then on to M/T. I'm the third owner. Here's a photo that was in Muscle Car Review earlier this year, May issue? and a part of Butch Leal's collection. First attempt at posting, Rod.

Thanks Steve, I'll settle in here for awhile until I learn the ropes. More history/photos to follow. That photo is too large to make it my Avatar, I need to work on that.

  20. Great car MT63AFX. I'm a lightweight Galaxy fan going back to around '64 when I attended an 1/8 mi. S/S FX meet at a local Western KY strip. The 63 1/2 Galaxy of Hippodrome Ford in Nashville was very impressive, although I understand that shortly thereafter the dealership changed to Hippodrome Olds. Look forward to more pics and info on yours.

  22. I recently stumbled on the lengthy text of what seems to be an old eBay auction listing for the Kentucky Colonels AWB '65 Dodge Coronet. Evidently it was listed by a Tony in Illinois with a very long-winded story on its history (some of which I question). Does anybody know if it sold and for how much or have any other info?

The first of a few images from a short lived S/S-F/X series that traveled around the northeast in 1966. These were shot at Dover Dragway in Wingdale, NY.
First up is Al Oakes' Nova ... not sure if it was a 427 Z-11 or a 396 based motor in the car at this time.

Another from the S/S-F/X Spectacular as I think it was called, at Dover Dragway. This is the Mark's Mobile Homes-Bill McDuell '64 Comet. This was one of the original batch of DST/factory built 427 Comets that were produced in 1964. Always a favorite of mine, I liked the stance on this car. Still a dual quad 427 hi-riser here.

Yet another from that 1966 meet at Dover Dragway. I only saw this car once and would like to know more about it, who it was, where from, etc.. It performed great and I believe it was powered by a Z-11, 4-speed of course. Wally Bell once gave me some information on the car but I don't recall what it was. My apologies for the poor focus.

If I've managed to do this right, here's some pics of my '66 Dart project. I bought it as a /6 race car for my wife and it sat for over ten years before we finally decided to do something with it.
The wheelbase has been moved forward 12", and we tooled and made our own carbon fiber fenders for it.

I didn't want too many pics on one post, so here's the rest. I made the fender tool with the extension but keeping the stock wheelwell location. The way we do our carbon (or fiberglass) you can't tell when we do a modification like that anyway, as we use a high end pre preg process for all our parts. So one shot shows stock wheelwell position, one shows it after moving it forward. Note that in the previous post when you see the new front clip, it doesnt look that different, but when you see it here with the factory fender on it; WHOA, what a difference! Then once the stretched & altered fender is on it, it looks normal again.
