In 1963 the NHRA S/S class was from 0.00 to 8.69 lbs per advertised horsepower. AA/S was introduced after the start of the 1964 season. It split the S/S class, 0.00 to 6.99 while AA/S became 7.00 to 8.69 lbs per advertised horsepower. An example was the 1964 Thunderbolt fell into S/S while the 1964 Hi-Riser Galaxie with the same engine was put into AA/S. The AA/S class was used from 1964 -65. In 1966 the AA/S designation was changed to A/S.

William "Bill" Timmons purchased the Ronnie Campbell's grey 1964 plymouth 4 speed SS in April 1964. Timmons raced it at the two day Centennial Drag meet April 25th,26th. In the photo he is racing Cleetus Goodwin. Goodwin went on to win the Sportman eliminator. Timmons took class A/SM formula 1 factory multiple carburator.

maybe you guys could answer a question for me. I was wondering if you guys knew the carb number for the Carter WCFB carbs that came on the factory dual carb set ups. There is a parts place that is going out of business and I thought I might try to buy up some kits for stuff I am planning on having in the future.

  20. Has anyone heard of a black 1961 Ford Starliner called "Mr. X" from the Hyattsville MD. area. It was driven by a William Riddle. It ran at Indy Nationals in 1961 and ran often at 75-80 Dragway. My father ran there then also and said this was one of the faster S/S cars that ran at 75-80. I'm looking for any info or photos of the car. Thanks

I was sent this photo of Bill timmons trophy win from the 1964 AHRA fuel and gas Championship held at the Thunderbird raceway. It was called the Silver State Centennial. He won his class and would have raced in the sportsman elim. The picture confirms this. But, the trophy says champion and is rather too large to be a class win. The local paper has The dick Stewert car as the elim. champ. I feel that there was an error about the results for the sportsman elim. Can anyone determine that the trophy is a elim. champion trophy or a class win trophy. Thanks

    Les-Ritchey engine.
Even after his factory teammates switched from four-barrels to injectors, Les Ritchey stuck with carburetors, successfully. His Weber-equipped SOHC 427 Mustang scored a holeshot-aided upset of Gas Ronda in Indy’s A/FX final, 10.67 to 10.63.

Herb McCandless ran this original Dodge Super Stocker, earning the nickname "Mr. Four-Speed." In 1970 he drove the Sox & Martin 426 Hemi Duster, in which he won the first Nationals Pro Stock title. Herb lives in North Carolina and is a regular at nostalgia events.

The Ramchargers was an after hours drag-racing club comprised of Chrysler's brightest young engineers. Their Dodge Super/Stock dusted all at the 1965 Nationals with scienced-out 426 Hemi power and a Torqueflite transmission. Roger Lindamood's Color Me Gone was heavily influenced by the Ramchargers.

Who knew "The Greek" had a super stocker ........

The Greek and Maynard put together a Super Stock Dodge for the 1962 season and match-raced it at Midwest events, where guys named Beswick and Minick were making door-slammer shows a drawing card. George Schreiber drove the car most often, but the Greek took a few turns behind the wheel as well.
