Man oh man I don't know what to believe now. I sure hope he didn't steal his on car and all of us were sucked into this. Hate to be taken as a bunch of fools just because we cared about a fellow HAMBer.. Damn shame...

I guess I'm not surprised, but what I'm not surprised by is the mentality here. Immediately everyone finds the guy guilty of stealing his own car, even though the cops never charged him or indicated he was guilty of that crime.
Yes, he made some receipts to maximise the value of the car after it was stolen, but I've heard of people doing similar things all the time. People getting their homes broken into, and because the insurance wants to give them less, they simply claim more (or more valueable) stuff was taken. Is that wrong? Yes; but it's probably more common than most of us know.
From where I sit the cops are more concerned with finding him guilty of various fraud than they are in finding his stolen car. If it turns out he had nothing to do with the theft I hope all you guys who jumped on the "he's guilty" bandwagon come back and apologise.
As for some "friend" saying he told him anything; I guess we'll take the cops and paper's word that this person really is a "friend". Might be a disgruntled friend, so don't read a lot into it.
If I were Dave, and found innocent later, I'd never set foot on this forum again.
I hope I'm not wrong in giving a guy the benefit of the doubt, instead of joining the witch hunt.

Yeah Pug man , certainly dont look good for the Hot Turkey man...........

as far as his repro car goes ...if it waddles like a duck , quacks like a duck , looks like a duck .......its a duck

I do know of one case , an ex customer of mine , burnt his own house while his wife was at work and his kids were at school to try and claim insurance , detectives went straight to his bank accounts ...incomings and expenditure and soon realised he was in financial strife , he was self employed and said he was working away , but found he had bought petrol at a service station a few blocks away from his home 45 minutes before the fire was reported . This was in the days when debit plastic cards were being introduced .....thats how the detectives were able to trace his whereabouts ........he done time ...lost his house , marriage , kids , business etc , all because of a dumbass thought of making a quick buck

The car is still missing. The report didn't say it was recovered. A LOT of people need to READ what's been reported and what hasn't.

    Innocent until proven guilty...
How could anybody with a bad intent, be so public, and then carry through with deception?
Just doesn't add up in my way of thinking.
I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

You mean like Madoff and a few others? GREED was their motive. Who knows what this guy was like behind closed doors.

Why 'our cars' equate to stolen Honda Accords? Because in the real world the police see far more tragedy, abuse and hideous evil done to other human beings. Cars are cars, in the big picture. It's just a hobby. Ego. Idolatry.

    easy to do though....

drive your car 20 , 50 , 100 mile away to a storage facility , book it in under a false name ....... pay a 2 year bond ........close the door walk away ............

I followed this build from start to finish ................sure hope the Hot Turkey man is innocent

  13. It would be the difference between $70K and what it would get on Ebay... I'm thinking probably $40K plus... So he'd be risking his life, his freedom, his family and his business for the price of a new Camry... Like I said, Florida is the #1 state in the union for insurance fraud, so I'm sure his insurance company is reminding the investigators of that.

It's disturbing to me how quickly the HAMB turns on one of it's own. The thought that a nationwide insurance co. might be trying to get out of paying a large claim and might have influence over an investigator in a small town in Florida.

Not prepared to pass judgement at this time but this whole thing reminds me of an age old saying. "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive".
Hope this this gets resolved in short order so everyone involved can have a good Christmas season. However, my sarcastic side tells me this is one that will take a substantial amount of time to shake out.:(

I would recommend he keep his mouth shut and all his thoughts to himself until the end of the trial and exhaustion of all appeals.

well maybe the build thread will get some air time for the HAMB on the news, or be evidence at the trial, but i can't help but wonder why put the guy in jail?

The problem is, the public does not understand what it takes to build a car and the parts involved. It is shown by the investigators and police. The HAMB has a complete build in the public domain, so there is no deceipt of what the car is. Until they show he has the car hidden somewhere, I can't pass judgement.

  26. maybe he did, maybe he didn't. who knows. the link ryan posted dosn't tell me he did shit. but, i would think the police would know more than they're releasing to have arrested him. anyone one here ever delt with an insurrance company when you have a vehicle claim? took me three weeks of phone calls to the asshole adjuster for a $1600 repair that was the other guys fault. he actually told me at one point that he "hoped" there would be enough money "left" on the guys policy to cover my repairs.

glad i wasn't trying to claim 70g's on a stolen car with very marginal title issues, and some hearsay from someone. the insurance company is squirming and twitching and jerking.......

  27. Time to kill or lock this thread. Whether he's innocent or guilty we can all find out down the road. To create drama and judgement about it, is that about traditional rods and customs.................... NO.

I have been mulling this over for the last few hours as well.....I have only met the cat once and hung out with him for a few hours at the turkey run a few years ago.....but have chatted back and forth with him off and on for a few years....he was a sincere guy....

I still have a really really hard time believing he jacked his own car....when he showed that thing it was like watching a proud dad watching his son take out a linebacker....

I hope I am not wrong.

That said there is a BIG difference in between the state of Florida CHARGING someone and then proving it to the legal standard of "beyond reasonable doubt"

There's a big difference between reasonable suspicion and reasonable doubt...

Again, I have a hard time believing he stole his own car....and hold out hope for better news....

As it was said on the old radio and TV show "The Life of Riley" starring William Bendix: "What a revolting development!"
