Mike, you guys have got a lot done in the last week. Side bars look real clean. The front end with rims and tires looks right in place. I most like your floor and trans cover, lots of foot and leg room. You did a fine job on it. You can Google Barona Drag Strip to see were the place is at. Nice 1/8 mile strip and the race on 10/6 will be a lot of fun. Sure hope you can make the ANRA opener April 20-21 in Bakersfield. Keep up the good work.
the power plant for car #2 ... we will get started on the other car after the first one gets done we want to get it out and on the track asap so we can start to learn what work and what dont also gives us time to collect more parts .....this has been one of my favorite builds
Congratulations Guys on having your first SDRA roller. Always look great the first time on wheels & out of the shop. Your going to need a bigger trailer !!!!!!!! Keep up the great work.
this week ends update .... tires came in mounted up and ready to burn .. battery box and tail light and on/off switch done firewall done
helmet bars done ... now the really good news ... we rebuilt rodchester 2 jet carb hot wired motor and let me tell you at one point mark was on fire and i was rolling on the floor laughing my ass off ..little gas and she fired up and with short pipes and mark running the battery wires right under the pipes he had fire to... good news is hes ok and motor runs good
You guys are flying on this build and it looks great. One hell of a nice looking cage and driver area. Got to make you and mark feel good to hear that motor fire, glad things went well.
new update drive shaft came back from driveline shop .. found qstick shifter from craigslist mounted it.. mounted coil.. fab work almost done have to make the body this week end then we will pull the car apart and start welding it out and then paint work starts .... will update pics soon starting car #2 soon parts starting to come together
shifter done.... loud pedal done .......body done ...... tach mounted done.....dash mounted and done .....radiator lines done ..... need to finish some little odds and ends then we rip it apart and weld and paint next week end ..... looks like we are going to start car #2 sooner then we thought ....already picked motor up 225 slant 6 with a 904 trans shifter and already have all the metal to start
question for you guys we started the motor the other day runs really well but when i went to rev it up the carb was hard to move the butter flys open to rev it. seems like it has way to much vacuum ? could this be true ? now with the motor off it is really easy to open carb
Did you have the linkage hooked up or were you just trying it without the linage? Does the motor move on its motor mount pads and bind the linkage? Can't believe that motor with some miles on it is producing that much vacuum? Open the butterfly's to a 1500-2000 idle with the throttle screw and see if the thing is still hard to open from 2000 - 4500 RPM. The car & body looks great. I still think your trans location is a lot better than how the PG fits in mine and sure gives you more foot & leg room. I see 3 or 4 of use HAMBster's at Barona Dragstrip (NW San Diego) in Oct I hope!!!!!! You guys should have two cars by then.
Sometimes a worn shaft/bushing will allow a butterfly to "wedge" against the throat sides under vacuum loading. You can check it by having someone manually hold the shaft centered while you tap the throttle (running of course), if it runs free that way you've found the problem. Also, I have to admit to a certain amount of curiosity regarding the addition of a seventh cylinder to the middle of a slant 6. Still an in-liner, and still within the rules ...... but decidedly unique.
thanks guys lots of good ideas to try .... {old28} when running motor carb wasnt hooked up to pedal .... talk to mark and if work keeps up the way its going we should be at barona with two cars .... going to take car #1 out to track and get some time slips asap ...{old6rodder} it maybe that i will have to take a really good look at that shaft after all it is a rebuilt carb that i had sitting around for years .... thanks guys
Mike, just keep um thinking. Will the second car have a inline slant 8 exhaust header. Sure hope we can work out a race site that we all can make sometime this year. I will be back east in MI middle of May - July 15 with my grandkids. Will make the ANRA Opener in April and no others until I get back.
so with car # 1 almost done we started car #2 not going to make to many changes maybe little smaller with the upper cage but same wheel base ... we scored a 225 with a904 auto trans found a smoking deal on some motor cycle tires for front and found a used tube front axle and crome hair pins 9" ford rear again this one has 3.70 gears and at same junk yard we found a 9" with a set of gears for car #1 so heres some pics of car #2 tuson in may and oct in cal here we come .....
front tires $68 each rear end with 3.70 gears $175 complete front end $375 used slant 6 $250 also just found a matching shifter at swap meet for $75 get them running and race ready then later we will build the motors little faster and bigger would hope by then the az race tracks will have there crap together ....
Well mike, no grass growing under your feet & parts. That is a great looking bunch of parts you have put together. What a score. Good luck finishing up car #1 and #2 is well on it's way. Glad to hear that you are planning a CA trip in Oct, the ANRA Finals or Barona? I will make sure we are at both, we owe for the hard work and expanding the SDRA group. I hope PIR is open for some nostalgia racing next year.
old28 more then likely barona .... as far as the parts score we shop all the swap meets and lately there has been a lot of good ones to walk ..craigslist is my back up as for the az tracks I think speedworld is a goner.. firebird is looking better
Maybe another option for Mike & Dick would be the slantsix race at Mopars At The Strip.Which was this past weekend but is usually around the same time every year.
Well I think Barona on 10/6 a Sunday 1 day race is doable as the ANRA Finals are the next weekend 10/12-13. We will do our best to be there for some match racing.
