The (open)differential in my '55 Plymouth is pretty worn and howls abit going down the road. Doesn't help any that it leaks a few drops a day. Since it's so slipprey but at the same time nice and thick, would it be benificial for me to top it off with some STP oil treatment next time I have to fill it up? Just curious.

Can't see that would hurt. I've heard of everything from ground beef to sawdust being used as a diff. fix. What's the worst that could happen? It could blow up and than you can put a better one in.

When I worked part time in a gas station .early 60s, had a guy with a English Ford that had us put STP and a 8oz can of white lead in the rear end. Did this for him every 6 months or so. He was happy so must have worked OK.

  4. Yes you can run it, guy I used to go to the races with would fill the rear on the race car with it. Never had a problem. One time spun a bearing in a small block chevy during a race and never scored the crank, used it as an addative to the oil.

I've used Lucas oil stabilizer in rear axles. Can't say if it helped.

  9. I did all the service work on a older cats fleet of cars and trucks back in the 80's.He drove 4-wheel drives. Once a year we would give all the gear cases a fresh dose of 90# and 2 cans of STP mixed in our lube dispenser. Never cracked a cover on any of his **** in 100,000 miles. Must have worked as he used his stuff hard>>>>.

I've used Lucas in all of mine for years....I think it helped....

I've never worn out a set of gears....Flat broke some though.

  11. I put it in the rear end of my '78 Lincoln donor mobile and it quit howling on the highway. I've done my best to brake it since but it just keeps taking the abuse.

STP is some great stuff. I was told by an old timer who I bought a steering box rebuild kit from to put STP in it after I put it back together.

i had an 87 camaro with the POS 2.8 v6 in it. My wife got it so hot one time, it fried the ****** with it also, smelled like burnt oil and knocked like it had a rod torn off in it. I fixed the ******, the motor still turned so i changed the oil and fired it up and never had an issue with it.. I attribute it to the fact that i ALWAYS put a bottle of STP in everything with every oilchange.. It cant hurt. I live by the stuff.

A friend of mine has a 454 in a 1ton mid 70s chevy with a ramp back on it, and has over 250k miles on it. its getting tired but the oil still comes out clean as hell. ANd he uses it with every oil change too,

I would probably just use some #140 weight gear oil instead of #90; it would be cheaper. It might not run out as fast either.
