Im finding it very difficult to find any Speed Parts for a 235 Straight 6 Chevy. Its not that the parts are hard to find, its just that they cost a arm and a leg. With the pay that i get, working where I do (i would never recommend a job at Round Table Pizza) I cant afford thoughs parts... SO i thought of a plan of my own. The intakes are pretty simple for Straight 6's, and I can weld, so I figured, I can make my own... There not to scale and I dont have any measurements yet, I need to go spend some time with my spare intake, but here are my plans, let me know what you think...
keep in mind your header/exhaust manifold mounts and any mounts for your linkage. your plans seem to need a little more work, though. Give us a head-on shot for a better idea how the fuel/air will flow into the intake ports. Good to see that kind of enthusiasm, though. check out the photos i posted in that last Chevy six posts for ideas. keep us updated. dan
I'm worried about that rectangular box that it's all based upon. There are so many obstructions, corners, the fuel is simply going to pool in the box and not get evenly distributed. If you can make more direct runners to the intake ports, you will see some improvement. If not, save your scratch and buy an intake in which all of this has been figured out.
since $ is a concern, why not modify your stock intake, i've seen it done before, gather an spare intake lop the car mounting plate off and reweld onto you stock one, make yourself a cheap 2 or 3 carb intake. hell you can do the same with the exhaust and make a cheap split manifold, probably be easier. just my .02 cents
Thats how they used to do it before the aftermarket stuff was out there. I split my own exhaust manifold on my daily driver. Cheap and easy.
just picked up a 2x1 intake from VAPHEAD for $170 WITH linkage, and thats BRAND NEW stuff. PM him and he'll give you the hookup. if you get a couple one barrel cores he can get you rebuild kits too. i'm using a pair of Carter W-1s i got from Levis Cl***ic, got the kits from VapHead. all i have to do no is rebuild the carbs and bolt it all up. i like yer "built it yourself spirit though...
Don't forget that the intake on a 235 does not sit level with the engine. The engine is mounted somewhat downward towards the rear and the intake is set up so it runs level. A friend of mine here has an intake he mad just by adding two more carb bases to a stock manifold. It took some tuning, but works fine. For what Eric (Vaphead) sells them for, I would think it would be worthwhile just buying them. Kansas Kustoms also splits stock exhaust for around $165.

Making your own intake would be slick but not sure I would want to try it on my daily driver. Seems like you would need to do a lot of experimentation to get it right. Check out the book Inline six Power Manual by Leo Santucci, it talks mostly about later inlines but close enough and has info and pics on homemade intakes.
