Does anybody here have a straight 6 in their COE? Ever seen one? (other than stock) Got any pics? Been kicking around the idea of a 6 in mine....namely a 300 Ford. Only because I have one already, and I'm a big fan of sixes. After much measuring, it will fit under the floor, but the height will make the doghouse taller than I wanted. Guess I will just have to slide it in there and see how it fits......... Also thinking about running a manual trans......
I was going to run a straight 6 in mine. Way to intrusive into the cab, it would have been way too tall and wide of a engine cover. I was kind of sad about it
I wanted to stuff a GMC 302 and I shouldda. Ford 300 would be a good engine I think,I cant wait for more responses on this.
I'm on board with a 6. Have a 6 diesel in mine and fits fine. Not to mention it motors good and still gets 18-20 mpg.
RMR&C, there was a 51 COE in Bridger, MT I should have bought. ($900), brakes were out. It had a Ford 300 six swapped into it. Owner claimed it worked great. Never got to look inside to see how well it fit though.
vet57air, is your engine up front or mid-mount? Would love to see any pics of the install or even the doghouse......which ch***is is under your truck?
I sit on my engine. The engine cover is about 4 inches off the floor in height. I have my seats bolted to it. When needed I have access to the engine by flipping the seats forward and activateing a switch which raises the cover with two air cylinders. The ch***is started out as a GM ?30 ch***is (motorhome). My build pictures are hear. http://community.webshots.com/album/551111392VqwVKS
Wow great build pics! Thanks for sharing, you give me some good ideas. I think I will mock up the six in mine...
Scott, this is a good shot of what Russ's engine looks like below the floor.(not my picture) Very clean install, and easy to get at when the floor is raised. Wish I would have taken some pictures of the underside. http://www.flickr.com/photos/27833232@N07/4938636811/
Thanks for that pic Barry....it really helps me visualize placement. Picture is worth a thousand words. Biggest challenge with a gas engine is that carb sticking up there. I'm sure that is why the stock COE's had updraft carbs on the sixes....
6bt ***mins would be the ultimate engine for your Coe. but they arent cheap, although im sure some deals can be found. would a 4bt be way underpowered for the application? that may help with space co.siderations, especially with wanting a manual trans?
Vet57air As I was scrolling through your awesome build pics and noticed how little clearance you had with the stock oil pan, can you tell us the original clearance dimension and the new clearance with the custom oil pan? did you build the oil pan yourself or is this something anyone could order? asking for people like me who couldnt build that. I really like how you were able to keep the engine under cab. beautiful craftsmanship.
When the truck was aired down (parked) the oil pan had 1" of clearance to the ground. When aired up for driving I had 6", with the stock pan. Never had a problem, but it was the lowest part of the truck. Custom ***mins oil pans aren't that common, so I had my buddy Karl give me a hand. Karl built my camper shell for me. The aluminum pan gives me 8" clearance (driving) and and holds 15 litres of oil. I added a heat sink/skid plate just in case as the pan is still a little lower than my front cross member.
Well, I did a little mock up today.....I used an old Ford 223 engine/trans I had laying around. It is very similar in size to the 300 six (which is still in the donor truck), the only difference is the manifolds are on opposite sides of the engine. The fit is better than I thought....see pics. The engine can still go down 3-4 inches, but not forward due to the front sump. I think I may do this...Would like to find an OD trans though, I found out my rear ratio is 4.10:1. I need input......what say you?
If you still want the manual trans, find a ford ZF 5 speed in the small block bolt pattern. Real heavy duty, hydraulic clutch, were in f250&350s' in the 80s' . Lighter duty would be M5OD, 5 speed manual in f150s' in the 90s', also hyd. clutch. If you're gonna keep it carb, Offenhauser 4 bbl maifold with a holley 600 cfm works fabulous. Lots of torque, you'll think it's an 8!!
I don't even have the original engine cover......will have to make one. I hope to build a custom intake manifold that will mount the carb (4 bbl) lower, so the top is about level with the valve cover. Purely dreaming right now.... Just did the rpm/ratio/speed calculator thingie.....man do I need to find an OD trans....
I would look into a different oil pan for the 300 if thats what your going to use. A late 300 truck pan and pickup is a rear sump which would let you move the motor forward, thus a smaller engine cover could be made. I thought about a 300 for my 56 C600 but I`m not sure if the floor and firewall would have to be heavily cut to do this. A ***mins put my ****** shifter at the back of the cab so I`m thinking of a Ford/IH 7.3 IDI, which will fit much better and keep the shifter where it is now.
When I built my 66 Ford pickup it had a low mileage 240 in it. Same as the 300. I left it stock other than the required header and split exhaust. 275 gears in the rear, factory 4spd. During the wonderful time of no speed limit, I cruised hours at a time at 90mph and made 25 mpg. I would build another truck with a straight 6 without hesitation. My daily driver 64 had a 223 set up the same way. Consistent 25mpg and ran just fine at 75.
