Did you leave the key in the Run position for an extended period of time? That can burn up points and the coil.

power at the coil, getting gas at the carb. There is only a few things left...

Points, condensor, dwell or cam(Not spinning). The other thing that I could be, and I've been here once. Make sure that the coil wire did not ground to the dist. Pull it back and put some blacktape on it.

Check each of those and you should find your problem.

Turn it over by hand and make sure the point open and close and that the gap is right.

Did your brake light short and fry a main fuse or fusable link. Don't remember when they started using fuseable links but. You need ot assure that you are getting juice from the ign terminal. Do you have lights and other elecrical stuff working>> If the starter cranks, run a wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the ign post of the coil.
If it runs that way you have a problem from the ignition swithc to the coil. Make up a jumper with aligator clips, that way if it works you can get home and sht it off by unclipping the wire, when you get there.

Pop off the dist cap, with the ign on open the points with a screw driver, you should see a small spark if there is power to the points. If not then you are not getting the ignition signal.

That's the NEG side of the coil grounding to the points. Make sure that it's not touching anywhere other than the points.

Disconnect the NEG from the coil and put a volt meter on it. You should not get continuity on it from anywhere but the points, except when the points are closed.

I had a problem on my 53 where the plastic cracked going into the dist and it was getting a ground from there. Which meant no spark..

  11. OUCH!!!! Ok, With a battery charger hooked up and the points gap set I managed to get her fired up and she ran great, but she wont start up on her own...without the battery charger she sounds like a dieing animal.... soooooooo, Im assuming that my battery is crap. Its the kind with the distilled water in it.

A problem I had once! I lost spark do to a bad insulator that insulates the coil wire going to the condenser inside the distributor. A little rubber tape on an open ground may do the trick!

It's probably your charging system. Once running It should run on it's own. It is now only running on the juice from the charger. Probably your Alt. / gen. is bad.

Right on!..he mentioned that the dash idiot lights were on with key off..a sure sign of a bad charging system ie the internally shorted generator/alternator (or the voltage regulator). Starting to recall -my-old days, when gas was 27 cents a gallon.

Check ground cable from eng. to frame, frame to battery.

I had trouble with my 61 Falcon because of a loose ground wire.

On a carbed, non computer car it is ALWAYS....

    1. IGNITION, do you have spark?

    2. FUEL, is fuel being delivered to the intake manifold?

    3. TIMING, Is the distributor even turning? Put a DWELL meter on the dist and/or check the points gap.

These are the FIRST things that MUST be checked to even BEGIN troubleshooting. Period...

  17. ok, my battery was CRAP! and my ground wire to the battery had a small split in it causing it to drain out.... that and the freezing weather killed my battery. One new battery, new wires, and points adjustment and i was on the road again.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!

    it sounded good

there was an escape of negative electrons....in turn current flow thru the
temporal anomalies was disturbed causing a loss of charge of the battery, resulting in a no-start condition

If it died when you hit the brake does it have power brakes, if so check your vacuum lines for leaks
