Switching out the steering column in my 40 Ford going to a floor shift setup. Picked up an old 70s column (Impala, Malibu, Camaro idk) It has a strange plug I’m not familiar with. The wires seem to be brown black and blue and they are flat with this plug. It’s not a fancy column with all of the bells and whistles just a plain old GM steering column. Anybody have a clue as to what it is?
That is for Cruise Control. Check the end of your left side stalk, the tip will be a push ****on. This was before the 80's multifunction switch. Usually an rocker switch on the dash to turn on cruise then set it by depressing the ****on on the stalk.
That's the nice "older" column rather than the ugly later one that had the dimmer switch on the side of the column.
you guys got it. Its cruise control I checked the left stalk, there is a ****on, I wont be using it any way I dont think my tri-power will like it very well plus I have a nice set from my other column which are going on it. Thanks guys
I don't see why your tri-power wouldn't like cruise. It hooks to the same spot a throttle cable does (if you go with a Rostra).
Can always wire up the switch to be used for something other than cruise. It's just a switch. Although I forget if it was momentary or not.
That looks identical to the steering wheel in my dad's '76 Nova Concourse in case that info ever becomes helpful to you.
No reason not to have cruise control with a tri-power. The six pac on my Galaxie loves cruise control. I have it set up so it won't hold speeds above where the secondaries start to open so about 78 miles an hour is as fast as I can run with the cruise on. Helps to keep me out of trouble.
twenty years ago you could go to the local You Pull It yard and find all the stock parts to put together that cruise control system (which I did for a C10 pickup) ...........That was then....I was in the same yard a few days ago...nothing remotely that old
I use to go to the wrecking yard for most of my build parts. Used several of those columns over the years but never hooked up the cruise control. Like vtx said "nothing remotely that old" anymore. I'm even having trouble finding parts 10 years or older at the parts stores. djw was lucky to have come across that column.
Some aftermarket cruise controls, can be operated by factory switches. Check out the instruction book for your cruise, you might get lucky.
My '68 Pontiac Grande Parisienne had that cruise control. I really miss that car but can't remember what I did with it.
I got mine at a Swap meet/car show a few years ago. We had a junk yard with a cl***ics section until a couple of years ago. I used to go sit there all fay and pull parts for future projects. Sadly the cl***ics section is gone
