A friend gave me this 39ish Ford frame for the day that the frame under my '39 p/u self destructs. We can't figure out what this dimmer looking switch is. It is mounted between where the clutch and brake pedals come through the floor board. But why the heavy duty battery cables? There is what appears to be a battery box mounted below the floor boards on the driver's side. Maybe a starter switch for a 12 volt auxiliary battery to supplement the 6 volt system? Any thoughts?
It's a starter switch. There should be a small tab sticking off to the side in the clutch pedal arm which contacts the top of that switch. When the clutch pedal is fully depressed, the switch is "on."
Yes, an early form of a neutral safety sw, but for manuals. & I'd bet the original oem key sw didn't have a "start" position. Marcus...
This is clearly a normal Ford starter switch…..typically used in 1932-36 Fords. Beginning with 1937 models, they removed that and went with a small start button on the dashboard, which activated a starter solenoid in the engine compartment. Those early type foot switches would carry the full current load of the starter, which is why the switch is so robust and the cable is so thick.
