My Merc is a '50 with '51 rear quarters I was on my way to Starbirds show and I was ran over by a one ton truck pulling a load cows. I was setting at the trafic light and he didn't see me and I didn't see him. When I was looking for a donar I wanted the car to be a tail dragger and a '51 would help me accomplish the look that I wanted.

I made the tail lights with a salvage tail light and red plexi glass. The bumper is off of a '53 Caddy and the area where the tail light is located is all chrome.
When I marked out the area to cut out, Randy asked me what are you going
to find a lense to fit that openning? Uhhhhh, I hadn't thought a head that
far. I just knew it would look Kool, I'll work out the details later. Walked around salvages and ended up using my wifes hair dryer and about thiry minutes had both lenses poped in place. I was very pleased how it turned out.

My friend originally built the car years agao and when he passed away I
wanted to own of his kustoms. When he was building the car he was tying to copy a R& C concept drawing and he got close. The car is setting on
a '79 Cougar floor pan. And because of the front he had to extend the front
sheet metal. I almost cryed... Very pleased with the results........We are
going to slant the B pillars, just don't know how much yet..... I almost cut a
55 Packard taillight down to fit but it wasn't going to give me a look that I
wanted. And I would hate to cut one of those tailights up for nothing.

That car is bad ass and they're our alot more of them out there. We thought
about keeping it a 4dr and still extend the front doors. The major reason I
want to covert to a two door is I have no center post between the doors.
This may be a reason why my top cracked. The car will be built more solid
and I plan on driving the wheels off of it and I don't want to go through this
    again.

Since I've bought this old kustom my friend built I've changed the back clip,
the front clip and know the doors. Well at least the top will be OK...

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I can not wait to get the Kat back on the road.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

Hows this? I also added the skirts to the 4door which could be easily done by cutting them.
The slanted post version could possibly be further improved upon, by more closely matching the front angle of the skirts to the angle of the pillar.

The back of your car has such a great look to it. It's funny that getting it whacked turned out for the best.

  6. The slanted B-pillar makes all the difference,I think. Gets rid of the "square" look at the door. Flows better...

  7. Can hardly wait to see it at the SK500 next year! I'm lovin' the toothed skirts roddinron drew up along with the slanted post. As long as I was doing all that metal work, I would consider working on the hickup on the top back edge on the remains of the rear door window and the drip rail above. With the door stretching and post slanting, you are all up in that window anyhow and I think flattening that line out a bit more like a two door window will really make that roof flow.....my 2 bits.

Yeah, I worked on that "hickup" a little if you'll notice, but that is an area that really needs work.

  9. Sure enough....I see it now. Maybe it needs stretched a bit Mickey? What's a little fancy footwork at this point....you'll need new glass anyhow. :) ....says Dave, who has done nothing on his own car and is quick to make suggestions involving a fair amount of work to someone else..... ;)

Roddinron made it easy for me to see where we will be going with the project. I appreciate the help and cannot believe the difference that
it is going to make. Come on Spring!!!

Very Kool, I hope my conversion will look as kool as yours. I love the frontend treatment. Is hard to beat Desoto bumpers.

Yes dave I'm going all the way Glass and all. At this point everything is real
easy because we are making suggestions and Roddinron is doing all of the work.

Thanks guys for all of the feedback with my build.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

Glad you like the photoshops, sometimes you wonder weather you should post anything on this board. I figured I'd get flamed, and Shittfitter1955 came through on that, but the fact that the RIGHT people liked it or at least accepted it, made it worth the trouble. Duplicating the skirts will be the hard part, you'll want them to follow the body line as closely as possible, so it'll take a lot of fabricating.
Send me some pics when it's done, and if you have any other ideas, let me know, I'll see what I can do. Now get the hell off the computer and go build it.

Thanks Jason we are pumped about the project. I Kan't wait to get it back on the road........ Remind me to get your autograph next month. I have a magazine that I need you to sign. Kongrats on the pub.

There might be another Merc ready for next years SK500. A chopped and section'd 50 Merc should be ready for the road. I've seen pictures of the project and it is way too bad. The section job is dead on.

I plan on being there again this year. I've had a blast the last two years and looking forward to it.

They have a kool picture taken at the Round Up. Car Kulture Delux or Ol Skool Rodz. I'm sure Janson can tell ya what page his on. Ha, ha, ha... Good idea bringing a project down on a trailer. I might have to do that. I'll throw the dash or some stuff that we've cut off of the Merc in the back of my wagon. Or maybe just a big picture.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick
