Over here Disc Golf activities coincide with smoking the wacky tobacckeeee!

Actually come to think of it, across the river in Eugene everything coincides with that!

Atleast your offering up your space and talent.

Hell, I'm only 30, I miss hearing Doo-Wop at car shows and on the radio.

  3. This to me smacks of grumpy old man syndrome and I don't normally get that vibe from you at all. Right away because someone has different interests they are lazy and seeking instant gratification. I wonder if we are genetically programmed to start talking like this after a certain age as it seems to go on for generations and generations.

  4. Granted I am from a different generation at 63,being poor as a child I went to work at a very young age to help support our family,,I grew up knowing that if I wanted something I would have to work for it.

The 2 people I spoke of expressed interest and they really wanted to build cars but when the work started,,so did the excuses,I rearranged my schedule to make myself available to help them both.

If that's a grumpy old man so be it!

I confess to being a curmudgeon at times and often my opinion doesn't set well with others but I still have that independent run with scissors attitude most of the time.

I do tend to go on a rant when all the problems with hot rodding is blamed squarely on us greybeards.HRP

  5. Pretty much any of us under 55 have dealt with this type of mentality at one time or another, there seems to be one in every crowd pissed off at the world. On the other hand,I've also met alot of older guys 55+ that are cool, supportive and friendly they are the ones I remember, not the pissed off ones.

I her what you're saying. . . to me, if someone's favorite band is "The New Kids on The Block" and they like that walk around with their pants on backwards. . . but can build a bad ass, traditional hot rod. . . what do I care?

Not everyone has the same personal preferences when it comes to music, clothes, hair, food, etc. . . if I'm somewhere for the cars, then all of that other stuff is irrelevant to me.

If someone is going to judge my car, my knowledge, and my ability to build based on how I wear my hat, then I really don't know what to say.

Bad knees are fine, I have a bad knee, and my back always hurts. . . so I understand the sitting around in a chair, it's the "barking" from the chair that I'm talking about.

. . . but I do notice that a lot of older guys are 100% completely intolerant, and verbally outspoken (to the point of being rude sometimes) to the likes and interests (aside from cars) of the younger generation. Which is fine, but then you lose the right to complain that the younger generation isn't into hot rods, customs, etc. . . cause those are the ornery folks that are driving them away from it.

I'm in my 30's, so I'm in the middle.

Don't get me wrong, I've met a lot of really awesome old guys who have taught me tons of stuff, given me tons of stuff, where there when I reached out to them for advice, help, etc. . .

. . . but all of them are really passionate about Hot Rods, Customs, etc. . . and don't care what anyone looks like, what music they like, etc. . .they're just excited to see someone half their age potentially carrying the torch so to speak. . . and those guys will always be number one in my book.

I affectionately refer to the young guys with the dyed black hair, up turned brims, black pipe leg pants, black tees and vintage kicks as “Columbine Kids”. I know several, and they are all good kids. The one thing that I do find interesting is that in their efforts to set themselves apart they end up all looking identical. Based on that alone they should be perfect candidates for “traditional” rodders!
    <O:p</O:p
Along those lines, face it, once you have seen a couple hundred “street rods” you have pretty much seem them all.
    <O:p</O:p
And if everyone was honest, the one car most folks attending “car shows” to see is their own.
    <O:p</O:p
When I do attend a show I go out of my way to park right in amongst the “nicest” cars there. I may or may not bother to run my car threw the coin operated car wash beforehand. And I keep a cooler full of cold Bud Light in the trunk. So come on by and say hello, I’m not hard to spot.
    <O:p</O:p
As mentioned earlier in the thread, most car shows are put on by “car clubs”. But the ones in my area who do have annual shows that take planning aren’t really “car clubs” at all, but rather civic clubs who’s members happen to own cars. That’s just not the kind of car club I would be interested in being a part of. If I were asked to help out for an event I would be glad to, but I’m not interested in a yearlong commitment as a member just on that basis.
    <O:p</O:p
But as a suggestion, perhaps if a club’s membership is getting too old to handle a show on their own, they might consider asking one or more of the smaller clubs with younger members, and maybe different style cars, in the area to join them in putting on the show.
    <O:p</O:p
These days, I pretty much exclusively only cruises and show and go type events with the exception of a couple local club shows where I have personal relationships with the members.
    <O:p</O:p
There is one thing that I would like to know maybe some of you old car show veterans may be able to answer. Why is it when a woman attends a car show she dresses like a school mum and when the same woman attends a motorcycle rally she dresses like the hottest thing in town?

I'm with HRP, I too have donated time and materials to help, seems when it gets tougher and thinking and money outlay happen, the project becomes a liability. Too bad, cause its a great hobby, I'm not a car show guy, I'll attend, walk through, get my shit together and drive off, go for lunch or something, got better things to do than sit all day. I gotta say though, I really like the whole rockabilly thing, its a great addition to our hobby.

Not gonna tell you how old I am, but I will get on the Medicare tit May 1!!!!...I often have to pinch myself to remind myself that I'm really this old....and I attribute this totally to being around Hot Rods for over 40 years...Be nice to this younger generation no matter how they look because it's what is in their hearts that really matters..and after all - they ARE the future of hot rodding....Joe

You know trbomax, maybe you are on to something. When I meet younger guys, as I just did on the HAMB (guy from next town over, has a Chev roadster pickup) one of the first questions is "where are the shows and cruise nights". It is difficult at times to find a good comprehensive listing, especially for the local cruise nights and charity shows which are, for me, the fun ones. In New England here, you can go to the Maynard, MA Auto Club site, they do a terrific online listing of auto events for the year. But if someone doesn't steer you to website, you'll probably never find it. We lived in Minnesota in the 70s, boy they do it right. The Minnesota Street Rod Assn, MSRA, is an umbrella group for the whole state. They hold a meeting before each season and everyone lays out their event dates. This gives anyone a complete picture of the state. I assume they still do this and still publish the Linechaser, the organization publication.
Maybe we need to toot our horn, get some coverage in newspapers and such using our "senior" status. Get people to come out to events that may catch the spark. They are always running press about senior bingo or mah jong, why not senior cruising with the caption, come and join us.
I think having the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion at New England Dragway this year will be a big plus, expect the NHRA publicity machine to crank up and people will come out to see the lots full of hot rods. When we ran our flathead FED in the 90s, it always struck me as to why the spectator stands were empty for the three nostaliga events they had at that track. When we towed the FED to cruise nights lots of people were very interested. NH being a big racing state, many short tracks with stock cars and supermodifieds. People like cars but doubt if any of them were even aware of the nostalgia events. The track certainly didn't do much publicity.

Hey a buddy sent me this. A hydraulic chair for mechanics, you can go from creeper under the car to upright looking in tool box for the right tool. Sounds like it would be of interest to a lot of people on this thread. Course if I could afford this, I could afford my dream car and I'd rather have the car!!

I'm 38 so not too young I am the youngest at our local weekly meet-up with guys in their 60's to 80's
I have several hot rods and classics that I bring their.
When it comes down too it we're all car guys who want too hang out with car guys.
I tell them my expertise with my knowledge of my cars and other models and they tell me what they know with theirs we have an equal appreciation of cars, sure I would like more guys there my age but I also like hearing stories of how times youse too be.

  20. In the last 3 years I striped 10 caskets for "Hot Rodders" who ruled the street. We're all getting older.
