Having a problem with the straight six. it's on a generator and w/p only. And every once in a while the belt seems to be stretching. is this a gen problem? Water pump? WTF? never heard of this. I have gone through 3 belts trying to figure this out. [IMG]

You didn't mention what the problem was but I assume it is slipping. On my daily I had a problem that nearly drove me nuts. I had put a new A\C compressor on it and when I would kick on the air the belt would squeal, loose belt right? so I snugged it up good, same problem both times accompanied by a hell of a racket. You could open the hood and with the a A\C on the belt would flop like it was really loose but with it off it would not. Finally figured out we had a stripprd bolt in the P\S pump and the extra load of the A\C would flex the mount enough to loosen the belt. Just a thought.

are you replacing them with the same exact belt every time?

    try a different brand/style,

my big motors have been able to strech just about any belt if I jump on it,

I finaly found a belt that has lasted a while though,

it is a cogged? belt with the notches on the outside,

    name brand escapes me though..

I guess I could go look [IMG]

No my problem consist of the belt actually stretching somehow. I put a notch in the gen. bracket and it hasnt moved at all. There is no power steering and the belt doesnt slip, squeal, nothing! I can't figure it out. I tried going from the suckiest belts that ever sucked (DAYCO) to a GOODYEAR GATOR and the Gator even stretched. I was told by an old school buddy that "maybe the Generator might be "Binding/stopping" for whatever reason and the waterpump drive is insisting on pulling and this might be stretching". Does this make sense? Can generators just stop and cause a belt to stretch? [IMG] it's not too tight, nor too loose.....belt widths match the pullys ok as far as specs wise........water pump spins freely....no sounds/funny noises (bearing seems mint).. and same with gen.... WTF!!!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

you can get those fractional horse power green belts from the farm impliment guys..

    ......

just thought, you got yer generater polerized?

    maybe it's fighting it's self,

    you know what I mean?

    where's a 'lecticle guru?

I work in an Auto Parts Supplier and deal with alot of peoples examples of poor quality. And I get alot of Dayco complaints... including mine. it stretched so easily. There was a spot on the belt that was stretched for about 4-6 inches.... damn... [IMG]

I had a problem throwing belts at high RPM's on a '65 Impala I used to own. Switched to Dayco and it never happened again. I have used them ever since with no problems and they seem to last longer too.

I had a similar (?) problem with a belt seeming to stretch on my 401" nailhead, just after I installed the engine. First time I checked the belt, it was loose. and I figured it was just initial stretch, so I reset it. Next time I checked it was loose again. I reset tension again. Checked again and it was too tight - WTF !!. I turned each pulley about 1/4 rev by hand and checked the belt tension at each spot. Found one of the pulleys had radial runout. Replaced the pulley and no more hassle.
Probably not your problem, just thought I'd add to things to consider.

my chevy II keeps throwing the alternator belt (the only belt) at about 7300 rpm, but hell, I got a good battery, and the Dayco belts are onlt $3 at autozone, so I just keep a spare in the car! [IMG]

I believe my problem is my uhhh... ummmm..... my alternator bracket that happens to be machined out of a solid piece of aluminum is the biggest hunk of shit on the planet, and I can watch it flex when I free rev the motor, and that's only to like 3000 rpm! Does anyone know of a STRONG mount for a full size alternator on the lower drivers side of a SBC? The one I have is from MARCH PERFORMANCE, and it cost me like $170. it cost me probly about the same in belts and excedrin! [IMG]
