Alright, I'm almost done stripping down the frame of my 53 F250 to give her a good healthy dose of my little friend POR 15. The front bodywork and cab are sitting in my driveway... The body is pretty straight. Aside from a few dents to pound out and some body filler (I know, I know...) it won't take long to have it ready to paint. None of the paint is really flaking, but there are a few spots that have some light surface rusting. I was originally planning on shooting it (first time painting a car) with JDBB. After a trip to the local auto body supply shop I am now considering SEM hot rod black. I know a lot of people on here have had great luck with the trim black... I am planning on stripping the paint off of the hidden interior parts (floor, etc) and hitting them with POR 15 just for that little extra umph of protection... I just want to get some opnions... Should I go through the trouble of stripping the whole truck down to bare metal, then priming, then painting with SEM hot rod black or should I just scuff her up real good and hit it with JDBB? I like the option of stripping it down so I know EXACTLY what is under the paint, and possible better rust prevention. I also like the idea that with the SEM black I could strip it to primer and paint it with something else down the road if I so choose... Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
Do you KNOW whats under the paint, or what kind of paint it is? If the answer is no on either of these you oughta strip it.
You already answered your question, you have all the info andf its correct. The chioce is yours. If it were me, I'd strip it and work up finishing with SEM.
I use HOK Epoxy Primer and its been great. The SEM HRB should only be a flattened urethane so its nothing special. Use the primer and either use HOK sealer, or overreduce the primer and seal with that.
That old stuff needs to go the new stuff is pretty harsh you could have lifting problems with your new paint. we have always used ppg's dp90 epoxy and have always had awsome results with it and you have up to a week befor you have to scuff it to prime.
