Stripped my hood today - need advice on little spots of rust

After 4-5 coats of aircraft stripper, I finally have my hood down to bare metal.

The hood had been 4-5 different colors in it's life and it took more work than I thought to strip it all off. I plan on mig welding up all of the holes from the trim, side markers and front FORD letters.

There are one or two spots where someone filled some rust holes with Bondo and primed/painted right over them. I know I need to cut these spots out, weld new metal in and do it right.

My question is: there are some really small spots of rust under the layers of paint. I've included a picture below of one of the spots. What is the best way to treat these areas so that I don't have any problems in the future?

I have a small hand held spot blaster and a pressure pot but they tend to make a real mess in the shop. I was wondering what you guys have used as far as a chemical treatment instead?

Ideally I would have liked to have soda blasted the hood (and other panels), but there isn't anyone in this area that has the equipment and I really just don't have the time to wait.

I'd like to take care of these spots before shooting a coat of epoxy primer on the hood in preparation for filler.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  2. I would sandblast the whole hood,,it will insure the dark area is clean,,then surface prep and prime. HRP

  3. you can soak a rag in vinegar and lay it on the rust if its a flat surface or spot blast them watchout that you dont warp the metal

    what year truck? i have a 72 f100

Hot Rod Primer is correct. You need to sandblast or glass bead the rust spots to pure white. That will assure you of no rust in the pitts where the rust was.

Be careful if you're going to attempt to sandblast a whole hood, it's easy to turn it into warped junk. I would consider spot blasting the bad spots and use maybe a chemical wash before priming. We used to use something by DuPont but I can't remember the name of it right now

lil blasting on bad spots, lil filler in the blasted area and selfe etch primer then epoxy primer. any more is a waste of time from what i see in the pics.

  7. We all have different ways to approach any repair,,I am a firm believer in sandblasting any and all metal I plan on painting,,yeah, any hack can warp metal if they don't use common scene.

Just like welding,,you move around,,turn the pressure down,,I can honestly say I have blasted may hoods and doors without distorting the metal. HRP

Thanks guys. I'll try Phosphoric Acid.

I don't want to sand blast the whole hood. There is no need to at this point.

It's a 67 F100 originally from South Carolina. It looked way better in the pics than it did on the guys trailer when he brought it to my shop.

    LOL

  12. I need to do the same on some of my Apache panels. I read the Ospho thread. Seems pretty interesting....

There is two DuPont products that get rid of the rust to. One is "Metal Conditioner" and the other is "Ferrous Metal Prep". Both kinda pricey in the $100 range
