I was on a motorcycle forum and the question was asked can the color be stripped from an A N fitting? I am a long way behind the times so A N fittings are still exotica to me. Can the color be stripped from these fittings?
yeah. stick them in a freezer bag full of easy off evne cleaner and set them in the sun for a few hours, anodizing should brush off.
The color would be next to impossible to strip without ruining the fitting. The color is anodizing, a chemical enhancement of the natural oxide layer on the aluminum. It's done somewhat similar to electroplating. Far easier to buy plain un- anodized fittings, or clear (no color) anodized.
Yeah forgot about that part, stinky stuff works much better. works better when warm too, thats why the bag and the sunlight....
Your point ? I know it's on the top of your head. You didn't need to point out how wrong I was, I had already done so. Providing info ? You should be so proud
after reading this thread, i thought , yeah that sounds like a goer. i had some romac full floating axle ends that had crappy anodising on them, so i threw them in a bag with some oven cleaner and left them overnight. next day i had a look and....hey presto... completely rooted aluminium axle caps, the oven cleaner has sort of corroded the aluminium and rendered the caps useless. p.s it didn't strip the anodising off either!
shoulda read what Tman said about not leaving it in too long... Also your oven cleaner may not be the same oven cleaner we get.
Yes, to reiterate. DO NOT LEAVE THE OVEN CLEANER ON TOO LONG!!!!!!!!!!!! Do a test spot. Those axle ends were prob Hard Ano? This only works on the froo frooo colors. Red, Blue, 3D Violet etc. Even then, do a test and try several quick coats, many times the ano will start to go after a couple tries.
I have used the ez off before on the red and blue and it worked for me, but I later bought some anodizing remover from eastwood that worked a lot quicker. Same as with the ez off though you dont want to leave it on there too long.
I did a tech on this awhile back - here it is: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=367777
I just used a small copper or brass(I'm not sure) wire wheel. Harbor freight has them. Put the small wheel in my Dremel, and presto. No chemical, No Color, No damage to the fittings. $.02
