Hey guys. First time on the HAMB, and I just know this has probably been covered a thousand times, but I'm not sure how to locate the thread. So here goes. I've got a set of aluminum ET mags that I'd like to strip down the finish off the centers. Looking for the best way short of spending the bucks on media blasting (NOT sand blasting). Aircraft paint stripper? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Finish? What kind of finish is it? Paint, clear coat?

Aircraft stripper. We stripped a 59 that way. The next best thing is an aerosol can of stripper called tal-strip i believe. It's available at oreillys. Either will work fine.
I stripped an aluminum toolbox someone had painted black and put it on my 89 Dodge. Just take them outside, downwind of your cars, upwind of the more annoying neighbor's car, and let er rip. DO NOT get any on any paint you like the look of. Wait a minute or so and the paint on the wheels will start to bubble like rust and peel off. Rinse off with the garden hose, in the neighbor's yard or in the street or in a back lot with weeds grown up. It will kill the snot out of plants. Good weed and bug killer.

  4. Aircraft stripper will work, but you'll find that you will need to do multiple applications in order to get it out of all the cracks and crevices. It's too bad that you don't want to spend a few bucks and have them blasted. It's the best way to get them down to the bare aluminum.

I just did these for a project I'm working on. 15x6 ET Supers, mid/late '60s vintage. I'm running 15x8.5 ET Supers in the rear.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Flat-N-Low, your wheels look awesome! Maybe I will check out the cost of media blasting. I got the wheels cheap enough, and I have the wife's blessing, so I'm golden!!! LOL By the way, two of them are the original finish (painted ceneters?), and the other four are DEFINITELY painted centers! Thick, I might add! I have four 14"X6.75" unilug ET's (Torque-thrust style), and two 14"X7.5" of the same. Scored them all for $200, so worth investing some bucks in. Putting a set of big n' littles on my '65 Rambler Classic wagon.
